Waxing your Board 101
December 25th, 2011 | Snowboarding, Tips and Tricks
If you plan on waxing your snowboard, then you are going to need to do a little bit of work to set things up. First and foremost, your board is going to need to be secured in such a way that you are not going to need to hold it in place personally while you are conducting all of your work. Many snowboard shops have a work bench with some kind of improvised vice or some other type of set up that you can make use of in order to hold your board in place. You could use a set of chairs or bar stools and some basic phone books to hold your board in place. Do not use anything that you would be upset about ruining, because you may end up hurting the chairs or destroying the phone books and it is definitely better for you to be safe than sorry. Also, you are going to want to be prepared ahead of time for wax, P-text and other types of materials to be dripping to the ground. What does this mean? You should be in the garage or outside, and don't be afraid to lay newspaper down everywhere to keep this stuff up off the floor.
Plug in your iron, now. It needs to be hot enough to melt your wax, but not hot to the point where it is making smoke. Your board is going to want to be at room temperature in order for you to achieve the optimal level of results.
Here are the supplies that you need:
- Sandpaper, including 80 grit paper and 100 grit paper,
- A plastic scraper
- A base cleaner
Why Wax my Snowboard?
All snowboard bases are naturally going to have a layer of skin which is P-tex and which has pores in it. When you apply heat to the base, this is going to open these pores up, allowing for the wax to be properly and fully absorbed. Every season, the pores are going to get too small to the point where they will no longer allow this to happen. A simple procedure is all that it takes to fix this problem. You should be heating the board up for the waxing process at least halfway through the season and at the beginning and end of the season as well in order to keep your board in good shape.
So what is this simple procedure?
The first thing that you need to know before you go about getting started is that the board cannot have any wax on its base because this is going to ruin the sandpaper and completely undermine everything that you are trying to accomplish right now. Using the plastic scraper that I told you to have on hand earlier, you should remove all of the wax that you can reasonably find on the board. Using the base cleaning product is also going to come in handy when it comes to removing the wax from the board.
