Waxing and Repairing a Snowboard

snowboardwax2Once you have achieved what we mentioned in the last blog about removing the wax from your snowboard, you can wet the sandpaper using a little bit of water, and then use a light amount of pressure in order to sand the entire base of the board. You should take care to use long strokes beginning at the nose or front of the board and going all the way to the tail or the rear of the board. You are going to want to create a pattern on your board's base which is going to be invisible to the naked eye. Make sure that you are not pushing too hard while you are doing this. You should continue this process between 4 times and 5 times across the entire surface of the snowboard's base. If there is any doubt about what you are doing, then it would be easier for you to have a professional do it. Most professionals can do the work for about $20, and they will keep you from accidentally destroying your board.

Now the next step in the process is going to be for you to clean up the base of your snowboard. You can use the base cleaner, wetting a rag or an ordinary paper towel or shop towel, and then clean down the entire base of your snowboard. After your board has been properly cleaned and dried, the next step in the process is either going to be to wax it or to repair it. Let us look at repairing it first:

Here's what you'll need:

  • Black or Clear P-Tex
  • Epoxy
  • Razor Blade
  • Sand Paper
  • Propane Torch

To start off, you are going to want to prepare your snowboard. Once that's done, you should be examining all of the damage that has been sustained by the snowboard on its base. If the damage goes all the way down to the core of the snowboard, then you are going to want to use an epoxy in order to fill in the damage. It is vitally important that you leave enough space for P-tex, because this is what the board's base is actually made out of. You should allow the epoxy to dry completely over the course of a night before you go any further.

Repairing Process

Now it is going to be time for you to take out the torch and the P-tex product. You should use the torch to heat up the P-tex using a low heat setting, allowing the P-tex to become heated and melted. If you are using the black variety of P-tex, then you can light it on fire directly using a normal lighter. If you are using the clear variety, then you are going to want to use the torch, otherwise you could turn the clear P-tex black, and this is not an ideal thing for you to do. Take care not to let the clear version of the P-tex catch on fire.
