Snowboarding is an absolutely wonderful way for you to get all of the benefits of exercise while enjoying the great outdoors during the winter month while some activities are not as easy to partake in. Whether you are an experienced snowboarder, or someone who is hitting the slopes for the first time, it is important that you keep some vital snowboarding tips in mind before you plan your next trip, including using the proper equipment, following good safety practices and exercising common sense to make sure that you get the most out of your day without running into too much trouble.
- Check the weather report!
Do this before you set out and make sure that conditions are going to be favorable for the day or week that you intend to snowboard. If bad weather is on the way, plan accordingly by making sure you're not trapped on the mountain when it strikes.
- Bring the proper clothing and equipment.
A lot of movement is required in order to snowboard, meaning that your clothing should fit loosely and should not prevent flexibility. Dressing in layers is important, and your outer layer of clothing should be water resistant and lightweight so that you can stay dry and warm without having your movement hampered.
- Make sure that your snowboard is the correct size for you and your experience level.
Also check that it is in good condition and properly prepped for the snow season. The edges of your snowboard should be sharp, especially when you are dealing with hard snow conditions or conditions where the snow is packed. If the edges of your snowboard are not sharp, then you will lose a significant amount of control over your board, leading to the potential for safety issues for you and other snowboarders on the mountain.
- Know your limits.
Do not try to snowboard in areas that are beyond your level of experience or know how. Avoid snowboarding too fast if you do not feel comfortable.
- It may seem silly, but learn how to fall.
Curl your fingers under, bend your arms and try to land with your weight on your forearms instead of on your fingers, your hands or your wrists, and you will prevent a lot of potential breaks.
- Before you hit the slopes, make sure that you are rested well and have no physical injuries.
When you notice that your legs are feeling tired, it is important for you to rest and relax. Overexerting your muscles is only going to lead to injury.
- Bring and wear the proper safety equipment.
Including but not limited to a helmet, elbow and knee pads. Wearing the right protective gear will protect you from injuring yourself.
- Make sure that all of your gear is in good condition, and that it fits properly.
Gear that is too tight or too loose may not provide the benefits that it is intended to.

Good tips. One thing missing though; wrist guards. Reflex isn’t always going to let you catch yourself with your forearms. As a ski patrol broken wrists are BY FAR the most common injury we see on our ski hill. I always wear them too.
