There are many different kinds of skis and skiing that are available on the market today. Every type of skis actually has its very own unique set of applications and features. It is vitally important that you become familiar with all the different types of skis that are available for you to choose from so that you can make sure that you make the right choice. The right skis are skis that are suitable for the type of skiing that you want to do and the type of skier that you are. If you make the wrong decision, the results could be disastrous, or at the very least embarrassing.
Alpine Skis and Alpine Skiing
These skis are designed to be fast, precise and excellent for when you are dealing with Pistes that are hard groomed. They are primarily designed to be good at easy turning. They have ski bindings that fasten securely to the foot at both the toe and the heel. They also feature a mechanism that is designed so that it detaches the foot from the ski in case a certain amount of force is applied.
Freeride Skis and Freeride Skiing
These are the skis that you are probably going to be looking for when you have mastered absolutely everything that your local ski area had to give you. These freeride skis are absolutely excellent when you are dealing with tricky or tough conditions. These skis are capable of floating through powder snow while cutting through any crud snow, and they can even slice right through any slush snow that you encounter. This is a ski that is intended for an advanced or expert skier with racing on their mind.
Telemark Skis and Telemark Skiing
These are downhill skis or touring skis. They have a binding that only actually attaches the boot to the ski at the toe. This is a ski that was pioneered in Telemark in Norway, and it happens to be the first ever ski that has a notable waist, meaning that turning has become much easier when you use these skis.
Cross Country Skis and Cross Country Skiing
These skis tend to be quite thin and quite slight, and they have ski edges that tend to be slightly straight. Just like with telemark ski varieties, the binding here is only attached at the toe. This type of ski is typically coated using wax to decrease the level of friction that is experienced during the forward motion. Some of the models of these skis have patterns on their bottoms which increases friction when a backward motion is attempted.
Freestyle Skis and Freestyle Skiing
These are skis that are specifically meant to be used during freestyle skiing. Each discipline is going to require its own unique type of ski. Make sure that you are choosing the right type of ski for your unique needs. If you choose an improper ski, you could end up getting hurt as a result.
