Tips for Tree Skiing Safely
January 13th, 2010 | Skiing, Tips and Tricks
Tree skiing is a term that most commonly refers to skiing off of the groomed slopes as well as skiing in the trees and among the trees, and this typically involves trees of a wide variety of different sizes, types and shapes as well. Tree skiing is absolutely an exhilarating type of skiing that is generally accessible at all types of ski resorts that you find in North America, including both the United States and Canada as well. Both the United States and Canada are said to be offering the best tree skiing in the entire world. This is because when you look at it on a grand scale, then the mountains that you find in North America are never going to reach the barren heights of the ski resorts in Europe and South America.
Skiing in the Glades
Once you have ventured away from the groomed trails and into the glades, you are going to need to understand that you are potentially increasing the possibility of an injury. You could quite potentially run into a tree and seriously harm yourself, and you need to consider this before you do anything beyond your skiing capability. Trees are not flexible like slalom poles are, so if you go head on into a tree, the tree isn't going to offer you any give. You could even potentially seriously hurt yourself just by striking a tree with a hand or an arm, so make sure that you are being careful. Tree skiing can be really fun if you know what you are doing, and you take safety precautions, so keep those things in mind when you go out for the first time.
- Ski in the places where your ability actually allows,
- Ski with other people, never alone, and always stay within eyesight and earshot,
- Make sure that you are always skiing within the boundaries of the resort,
- Pay attention to the time, and only ski in the trees when you can safely see them,
- Keep a backpack with essential supplies with you at all times, it may just save your life,
- Make sure that you are looking between the trees rather than at the trees, as your body will follow your eyesight,
- Make sure that you are always wearing a helmet as well as goggles,
- Never ski with pole straps as they are capable of becoming caught in the trees, which can cause serious injury to you,
- Beware of tree wells, and recognize what they look like so that you can avoid them, otherwise you may end up getting seriously hurt in the process,
- Take a skiing lesson before you go tree skiing to brush up on your capabilities and improve your chance of safe skiing.
