Ski equipment can really add up in cost, but you can save a significant amount of money if you perform systematic maintenance and take good care of your skiing equipment. Your skis will be durable, and they will provide you with a much better and safer experience on the slopes if you are simply willing to put a little bit of time and effort into their care on a consistent and long term basis. You can either keep your skis tuned and waxed by visiting a pro shop, or you can do it at home by yourself with the right know how. If you know how to care for your skis and ski equipment yourself, it may be most cost effective to buy the materials to perform the maintenance yourself.
If you perform a little bit of primary ski care every five to ten days during the ski season, you can keep your skis in excellent shape. After you wax your skis you need to sharpen their edges. You should also take the time to look at the bindings, ensuring that they are not maladjusted.
Waxes for skis are made according to whatever temperature they are best suitable for. There are two different ways to apply wax: rubbing the wax and melting the wax. Rubbed wax is the type that has a higher chance of wearing off, and hot wax is definitely the more durable solution. You can use either a special waxing iron, or an old regular clothes iron to apply the hot wax to your skis. To begin with, you should let the hot wax drip along the base of each of the skis. You can smooth the hot wax down along the length of the ski using the iron, and then set the ski aside. Once the wax has hardened, you can use a rubbing pad to better smooth and polish the waxed ski.
The sides of your skis have steel edges that facilitate your capability for turning as well as stopping. These sides can become nicked or gouged if you stone them or bang them together during use. You can test the smoothness of your ski edges by running your finger along each edge. You should sharpen the edges of your skis if they have any burrs or nicks in them. It will take some skill to learn how to sharpen skis, as this process is not as easy as waxing them. Make a point not to remove too much of the metal from the edges of your skis. It is usually advisable that you use an edging stone to remove the burs from the edges of your skis using a back and forth motion. You need to make sure to keep the angle of the stone constant at all times in order to produce the best results on the ski's edges.
Giving your skis a coat of wax before you store them for summer is a really effective way for you to protect them from moisture and the chance of rusting along the edges. It may also be advisable to loosen the release mechanisms in your bindings to keep the springs from losing their tension while being stored in the summer season.
