Tips for Glade Skiing Safely
January 14th, 2010 | Glade Skiing, Skiing, Snow, Tips and Tricks
Skiers that ski in the northeast may be limited by elevation when it comes to skiing, but that does not mean that they have to be limited by the terrain. A popular method of skiing in this day and age is glade skiing, which involves skiing among the trees rather than following the set, groomed paths created by the resort. Taking your skis into the woods is a great option if you want to enjoy what the terrain has to offer, but it is vitally important that you be safe in the process if you want to prevent injury while skiing.
There are a number of unique hazards that you need to consider when it comes to glade skiing or tree skiing, but following some basic tips involving common sense can really minimize these hazards and improve your chance of skiing safely.
Ski competently. There is no ski patrol nearby when you're off the beaten path, so make sure that you are skiing responsibly and that you are skiing on the right terrain for your own unique ability. Most glades are perceived to be black diamond runs, and for obvious reasons, so be safe.
Never ski on glade trails that have been closed. The resort workers cannot possibly patrol every single inch of the woods on the properly. If you ski under or around a closed rope, and end up getting hurt, it may become extremely tricky to get the help you need.
Never, ever ski alone when you are skiing in the woods. There are a very limited number of patrollers, so never go alone, otherwise you will not have help if you end up getting hurt or lost. The best numbers are to ski with three people or more, so there is always someone to go for help while the others stay behind.
Carry a radio, walkie talkie or cell phone. This way, if something happens and you need help, you can talk to someone and get the help that you need.
Absolutely always make sure that you are wearing your helmet and your goggles. Trees are hard, damaging and painful even when you are only skiing very slowly. Even the smallest branches can hurt your eyes, so make sure that you are protected.
Pay attention. Look before you exit the woods, because skiers that are coming down on groomed trails may not notice you come flying out of the woods until it is too late.
Be timely. Do not tree ski late in the afternoon, because tree skiing is impossible in the dark and you do not want to be caught in the woods when the sun goes down.
