The Best Skis For Kids
October 19th, 2009 | Kids, Product Reviews, Skiing, Skis
If you’re ready to take your kids out on the slopes, it’s a good idea to make sure they have the right equipment. While it’s perfectly fine to rent equipment, especially if they will only be skiing on vacation, if they show an interest in the sport, it’s a good idea to spring for a pair of skis that they can learn on and grow comfortable with. It’s important to pick a pair of skis that will actually fit your child, and outfitting them with adult skis is asking for a disaster. Take the time to have the skis professionally fitted if at all possible. This will give your kids the firm foundation they need to begin learning the right way.
This year, there are many new skis that have come out just for kids. Most are great, all purpose skis that will get the job done, but there were a few standouts that we found. These skis are highly recommended by the pros and will give any junior skier the support to get down the mountain safely and have a lot of fun while they are at it.
Volkl Junior's Mantra Skis (bindings not included)
Volkl is known for producing some awesome skis, and their kid’s models are no different. They may be a bit pricey, but you do get what you pay for. The skis come in designs and colors that kids will love and they are just right for pretty much any kind of skiing, including downhill and alpine. We loved the fact that these skis are handmade with a special wooden core. This gives them a unique feel and a unique edge that is unsurpassed.
These skis are a bit wide, but that makes them well suited for beginners. If your kids are already pretty advanced and looking to carve, these may not be the best choice, but overall, we found them to be perfect for most uses and they are certainly a great entry level ski for kids. The bindings are not included, so you will need to have them fitted at a store to make sure that everything goes together properly.
Roxy Juicy Skis w/ Integral Juicy Binding
This is another great brand name that is well known for their kid’s skis. We loved the designs this year and kids will appreciate just how well these skis work. They have a very light inner core that makes them easier to maneuver, and we found that they were well suited to general skiing. We don’t really recommend them for advanced junior skiers, but they work very well for rank beginners all the way up to intermediate skiers.
Parents will appreciate the integrated bindings, which means that not only do you save money with them, but there is a lot less of a chance of having the bindings disappear - which is pretty common with kids. For the money, this is a solid ski and one that we highly recommend, especially for novices.
