About the Resort:

Dodge Ridge Ski Resort first opened its doors in 1951 and became an instant favorite with locals and with travelers. This nice resort goes all out to make you feel at home and there are plenty of activities there to keep the whole family busy. With numerous trails, five different terrain parks and plenty of snow, this is one resort that ranks very highly when it comes to quality skiing and snowboarding.

There are eight lifts that serve the trails, with three additional surface lifts. All told, there are currently 59 runs in operation and there is little danger of overcrowding, thanks to the sprawling trails and great set-up.

What You Need to Know:

Dodge Ridge is open from December through April, and their lift tickets are quite reasonable. The hours of operation are from 9am to 4pm throughout the season, and special discounts are frequently made available. The lodge is very well appointed and we found that the trails were all well maintained and closely patrolled. This is a very safe place to ski, and it offers enough variety to stay challenging, even for the best skiers.

Tips for Beginners:

Out of the 59 runs, only 20% are suitable for beginners. The terrain parks are a great place to start and there are plenty of lessons scheduled throughout the day with the on-staff pros. The resort is also very good with teaching children and there are special rental packages that include all the gear you need, as well as your lift tickets and instruction fees.

Since the trails are so well patrolled, this is a very beginner friendly resort, even though the majority of the runs are dedicated to intermediate and expert skiers. There are plenty of spots to learn cross country skiing as well as snowboarding, and this is a great place to get your feet wet so-to-speak, if you are completely new to skiing.

Skier Profile for Morgan Smyth

Morgan Smyth was born in Northampton, MA on February 10, 1986. She started skiing at the age of 2, but was not entirely convinced she liked cross country skiing at first. Once she got into it, she became somewhat of a tiger, placing in numerous Junior World Championships. Now that she is moving through college, she has plans to work her way to the World Cup. She began her skiing racing career at the young age of nine, and gained an entirely new perspective on cross country skiing at this time. She may not have liked skiing in the past, but this is when it became a real passion for her, especially after working herself through numerous club and regional races, scoring herself a place at Styn, Norway's 2004 Junior Worlds. Her new head development coach, Matt Whitcomb was actually a member of the Bill Koch league at the same time, though only for a year. His final year in the league coincided with Smyth's first year. They had already built up some memories and some skiing history together before he was named as her head coach of development, in other words. A month after she returned from Junior Worlds she managed to earn three medals at the 2004 Junior Olympics, two bronzes and a gold medal.

Where She Is Now -

2008 was originally supposed to be a year made of recuperation and rest for Morgan Smyth, but she could not prevent herself from hitting the snow and ended up pulling fifth place at NCAA and a 10th place at the Canadian nationals. She has fully recovered from her training and seems to be progressive phenomenally. According to her head development coach, Matt Whitcomb, she is definitely going to be a factor at the U23 World Championships which are set to be held in France, and she will also definitely be shining at the World Cup starts which are being held in Whistler, where she will more than likely see her first World Cup.

Career Highlights -

Morgan Smyth has been skiing since the age of 2, but has a limited professional record. In 2006 she placed 7th in the FR sprint in the Junior Worlds. Following the Junior Words she took 3 different medals in the 2006 Junior Olympics, including a gold and two bronze metals. She is also a three time junior worlds racer at this point.

Interesting and Inspirational Quotes -

"Athletics has empowered me and I hope that I can help and inspire others to find and follow their dreams." - Morgan Smyth

"I don't want to sit at a desk!" - Morgan Smyth

"I started skiing when I was 2, but got a whole new perspective on cross country at 9. Entering Bill Koch league at 9 turned cross country skiing into my passion." - Morgan Smyth

Eldora Mountain Resort, Boulder, CO

Eldora Mountain Resort is located: 20 miles from Boulder, CO

Phone: (303) 440-8700

Website: http://www.eldora.com/

About the Resort:

There aren’t many resorts in the Boulder area, but this is one of the best. Actually located in Nederland, but easily accessible from many points across the state, this resort is quickly becoming quite popular. Their rates are pretty reasonable and we found the powder to be exceptional. Even though the area gets around 300 inches of snow a year, the resort makes a bunch on their own to ensure you’re always going to have a great experience on the runs. The staff is helpful and this is a great place to take the family.

What You Need to Know:

The season opens a bit late here and closes a little early, running from Mid-November to the first part of April. That’s not much time to a lot of skiing in, unless you live nearby. However, we found that the resort does pack them in and move them along. They have numerous lifts and move around 8,000 people an hour, which is pretty standard for a resort that is this size.

There are 53 trails currently in operation, spread out over 680 acres, so you won’t be bumping elbows with anyone. The facilities are well set up and they keep the trails patrolled and in excellent condition. We found it to be one of the nicest resorts we’ve been to in a while and even though it’s a little small in some ways, it’s well worth the trip.

The cross country center brings in a lot of people each year, and even if you’ve never tried this before, we highly recommend it. You’ll be able to get a great crash course in cross country skiing amidst some of the most beautiful country in Colorado. It is also a place that is very friendly to snowboarders and even though there are no halfpipes, the resort offers four different terrain parks. Most only offer two, so if you love to board, this is the place to do it.

Tips for Beginners:

You’ll find out 20% of the trails here are suitable for beginners and the only one you’ll really want to avoid is Moose Glades. This resort is geared a little more towards intermediate and advanced skiers, but they still have a very good instructional program. Lessons are frequently held throughout the day and they do offer special discounts and inclusive packages with gear.

The kids lessons here are among the best we’ve found and they will even teach youngsters as young as three. They offer instruction in numerous disciplines, including downhill, alpine and cross country. Snowboarding lessons are also available and the techniques taught in all of their classes are solid and will pay off.

Spooner Lake Cross Country Ski Area, Carson City, NV

Spooner Lake Cross Country Ski Area is located in: Carson City, NV

Phone: (775) 749-5349

Website: http://www.spoonerlake.com/

About the Resort:

This is an incredible resort that spans more than 9000 acres. Whether you are brand new to cross country skiing or an old pro, this is probably the best place to go in the area. They’ve done a great job of making sure that all levels of cross skiers will have more than enough to do and there are also plenty of other activities here that the entire family can enjoy.

We loved the log cabins for lodging and they are all very well maintained and cozy. This is truly the spot for a relaxing weekend getaway and you won’t be too crowded either, since there is more than enough room for everyone here.

What You Need to Know:

Since many of these trails are remote, the management asks that all skiers bring their own food, water, and preparations. You’ll be pretty far from the base on many of these trails and it is imperative to make sure that you have everything you need with you. Advanced skiers that plan to stay awhile will be best served by using the cabins that can be found in many spots along the trail.

This is a serious place to cross country ski, but you’ll still have plenty of fun. The trails are immaculately groomed and there are frequent patrols to make sure that everyone is safe and well cared for.

Tips for Beginners:

The beginner trails can be found at the base of the mountain and there are also some great lessons that you can take advantage of throughout the day. We highly recommend going on one of the shorter trails until you are well versed in the art of cross country skiing since it can be tiring. Make sure to bring plenty of food with you and learn about packing while skiing to make it easier.

Even though many of these trails are geared towards more experienced cross country skiers we still found that this was a great place to learn and enjoy the art.

Website: http://www.royalgorge.com

About the Resort:

If you love cross country skiing, this is the destination for the winter. Royal Gorge Ski Resort is a huge favorite among cross country skiers and there are plenty of reasons to visit and to keep coming back. The atmosphere here is great and they are very family friendly. Although it is a popular resort, overcrowding really isn’t an issue, although it can get a bit crowded during peak seasons. However, they keep everything running smoothly and there are few calls of complaints.

What You Need to Know:

The trails here are absolutely immaculate, which is perfect for cross country skiing. The lodge is very well appointed and overall we found their rates to be reasonable, especially given the level of service that you receive. The resort is open every day of the week from 9am to 5pm.

This is a huge resort with around 90 trails, 8 warming huts and they even have little trail side cafes that are perfect for a snack while you’re having fun. There are four different surface lifts and we didn’t end up having to wait for very long at any time during our stay.

Tips for Beginners:

28 of the trails here are perfect for beginners and we highly recommend taking advantage of their low priced lessons. Cross country skiing is a lot of fun, but it’s important to know what you’re doing. Patrols are frequent and they keep an excellent watch on beginners.

This is a great place to get kids interested in cross country skiing and the schools here are very well suited to children of all ages. The ability to stop off and rest is great for beginners and the trail side cafes are ideal for doing just that.

Rim Nordic Ski Area is located in: Running Springs, CA

Phone: 909-867-2600

Website: http://www.rimnordic.com/

About the Resort:

This is actually a part of a group of resorts and they offer some great deals between them all. If you are serious about cross country skiing, this is a great place to go. It's a bit smaller than some resorts, but they have done a great job working with the space that they have. This is also one of the few places to snoeshoe and among those that enjoy this sport, this resort has become very popular. This is a family friendly area and there are plenty of activities to keep everyone busy during your stay. The restaurant has some great food and overall, we found this to be a very nice resort.

What You Need to Know:

Dogs are not allowed at this particular resort, even though a few others in the area do allow that. There are a total of 12 miles of trails and we found them to be impeccably groomed. Some of the trails are quite long and more suitable for advanced skiers, but there are plenty of shorter tracks that will serve beginners well.

It is important to bring a few supplies with you whenever you cross country ski. There are not going to be any places along the trails to fuel up, so you'll want to bring everything you need with you. Since it is a smaller resort, you'll never be that far away from the main base, but it is still a good idea to bring the things that you may need.

Tips for Beginners:

There are quite a few short trails here that are very well suited for beginners or for snowshoers. We recommend taking advantage of lessons, especially if you have never tried this type of skiing before. There are some great deals available on lessons for people of all ages, and overall, their rates are some of the lowest we have found.

There are some great kids lessons available here as well, and they do offer special deals on reduced fees for rentals if you do get lessons, so it is well worth the money to take advantage of them.
