Continued from part one: Just like with nearly every other type of physical activity, people that go snowboarding are susceptible to being injured. Here is a guide to treating snowboarding injuries and what you need to know about staying safe on the slopes.
- * Treating Snowboarding Sprains:
If you have sprained your ankle, your wrist or your knee, the first step is a process known as RICE. RICE stands for Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. This is the safest as well as the easiest way for you to heal an injury. It is vitally important that you follow all of these steps as swelling is capable of causing loss of motion as well as pain, limiting the use of your muscle. Limiting the use of your muscle will result in a weakening, a shortening and a delayed healing of whatever limb has been injured. After you follow through with RICE, you should visit your family physician for proper diagnosis of the sustained injury.
R: Rest - you should spend at least between 24 and 48 hours resting the sprained limb following the injury.
I: Ice - The ice should be used in order to reduce the swelling and the pain, and it should only be applied for between 10 minutes and 15 minutes at a time. If you do not have any ice then you should use something else that is frozen such as a bag of frozen vegetables. You should never apply heat, because heat increases rather than decreases the swelling involved in the injury.
C: Compression - There are a number of different ways that you can achieve compression. You can single wrap or double wrap an elasticated tubular bandage such as Tubigrip, or wear a crepe bandage or an elasoplast strap depending on your needs and what you have available at the time of the injury.
E: Elevation - You need to elevate the limb that has been sprained so that it is horizontal, allowing for swelling as well as discomfort to be reduced.
- * Prevention of Injuries while Snowboarding
You can prevent snowboarding injuries by following safety precautions and wearing the right gear. You should absolutely be wearing a helmet, the proper boots and any other protective gear that you can get your hands on in order to make your injuries less dangerous. You should also take the time to learn how to fall, as falling properly can save your life when you have a particularly nasty tumble on the slopes. You need to be strong, sturdy and healthy enough to be on the slopes for the best results, so make sure to train before hand, getting yourself in good shape by taking a fitness program and snowboarding lessons to make sure that you are prepared. You should also have your fitness instructor fit your gear for you, ensuring that you have the right gear in the right fit for the best possible results.
