Snowboarding Safely pt 1

snowboardingtripSnowboarding is one of the more popular snow based sports out there. Just like with nearly every other type of physical activity, people that go snowboarding are susceptible to being injured. Taking the right precautions and wearing the right protective gear is going to help to protect you from sustaining a serious or severe injury while on the slopes. Here are a few of the more important snowboarding safety tips that you can keep in mind for dealing with common snowboarding injuries, treating the injuries and also preventing them as well.

- * Common Injuries from Snowboarding:

Snowboarding injuries are most common in the body's upper extremities as well as the ankles. The most common injury from snowboarding is a sprain. The next two most common are contusions and fractures. Upper body injuries tend to be most common because snowboarders have a tendency to fall forward or backward. With a forward fall, the snowboarder will use their hands and arms in an attempt to stop themselves from falling down, and this leads to issues with the head, the wrists, the shoulder and the elbow as a result. If on the other hand the snowboarder lands backwards, then he may hurt his head or his coccyx (tailbone). When they fall, these snowboarders are generally advised to keep arms tucked in, rolling with the fall in order to distribute the fall's impact over a much larger portion of the body. Bruises to the body are always better than a fracture to the wrist or ankle, after all.

When lower body injuries do occur, they are primary in the knee and ankle area. This is because the feet are strapped onto the snowboard, and both feet are forced to point in the same direction, localizing movement of the knees and preventing any twisting from occurring. The risk of knee injury tends to increase with snowboarding expertise, since experts like to employ aerial maneuvers and use harder boots.

Contusions are most common on the face, head, chest, pelvis and abdomen. Lacerations tend to be the most common on the face and the head. Dislocations are most common in the upper extremities of the body. There are also potentials for severe spinal and head injuries which have occurred when a snowboarder loses control of their board while they are going at a high speed.

It is important that you know how to tell whether or not your injury is serious. There are a variety of symptoms suggesting what type of injury you may have as well as what needs to be done to heal it. Swelling, for example, should never be ignored as a symptom that something is wrong. Swelling occurs around a joint causing reduced range of motion and pain as a result. If you press the injured body part, you should feel tenderness. Weakness can also occur, and tingling and numbness may also result, and these symptoms are related to compression of the nerve and require medical attention.
