Snowboarding Glossary

jumpingBackside Wall - The backside wall is the wall that will be behind you when riding straight down the middle of a half pipe. Looking down from the top of the half pipe the left wall of the half pipe will be the backside wall for regular-footers, and for goofy-footers the wall to the right is the backside wall.

Base - The base is the layer of snow that is packed down hard and covering the bare ground.

Betty - A betty is a term that is used to refer to a female snowboarder.

Blindside - When a rider is making a rotation where they have positioned themselves so that they cannot see their landing without stretching their neck to try and see over their shoulder. This generally adds to the difficulty of the trick.

Board Length - This is the measurement of the snowboard from the tail to the tip.

Boned Out - This is a term that is used to convey a trick where the element of style is emphasized.

Bonk - What this means is to hit something with a snowboard.

Breakable Crust - A condition most commonly experienced in the spring, when wind, rain, warm weather, freezing rain, or sleet can create a hard but thin crust to form on top of loose snow.

Bullet Proof - This is a term used to describe snow that has frozen or could be described as super hard.

Carbon Fiber Material - Used to add strength and stiffen up a board while reducing the overall weight when compared to other materials. This consists of fibers made of carbon that are woven together.

Carve - This is a term that comes from skiing, and refers to cornering while moving fast.

Cement - A heavy type of snow that is found in some coastal regions. The Pacific Northwest is an area where that type of snow is commonly found.

Chicken Salad Air - While in the air the rider reaches their rear hand up to grab the heel side in between both bindings with the wrist twisted to the inside from behind their front leg while it is boned,

Closed Mold - A mold that helps speed up production of mass produced boards by eliminating much of the post mold shaping and finishing. In a closed mold all of the components of a board are pre-shaped and placed inside of the sealed chamber of the mold.

Coping - Usually made or formed out of PVC pipe, cement, or metal, this is the rounded lip at the top edge of ramps or other obstacles.

Corkscrew 540 - Also known as a barrel roll, this is a backside 540 that is also done sideways.

Crail Air - When in the air when the rear leg is positioned to the back, the rider grabs the board by the front foot with the rear hand.
