Snowboarding 101 – Switching the Edge

snowlAnother one of the most important tips and techniques that you can learn when it comes to learning how to snowboard is switching edges. If you should happen to find that you are on the wrong edge of your snowboard, then what you normally have to do is to unfasten your bindings, turn yourself around and then reattach the bindings to your feet again. However, quite luckily there is a much easier way for you to be able to switch edges. The way that you can do this is by rolling onto your side while your feet are still attached to your snowboard. In this article we are going to talk about how you can switch edges on your snowboard much more easily.

Toe to Heel Switching Edges

  • Step #1: This is generally going to be easier for you to do than to switch from heel to toe. What you want to do is begin by dropping down onto your knees, planting your hands in the snow.
  • Step #2: Next you are going to want to let your elbows move down so that it will be easier for you to roll onto your side, providing additional support.
  • Step #3: Now you should duck your shoulder down, moving your upper body in the direction that you are rolling in.
  • Step #4: Now your snowboard should go up into the air so that you can gradually allow it to be turned around.
  • Step #5: By now you should be on your back with your snowboard in the air.
  • Step #6: Finally, put your snowboard on the ground. Push yourself up using your hands so that you are in a sitting position. You have officially switched from toe edge to heel edge.

Heel to Toe Switching Edges

  • Step #1: In changing from heel edge to toe edge, you are going to want to sit down on the slope, bending your knees slightly.
  • Step #2: Now you are going to want to lie down, placing your hands at your sides.
  • Step #3: Now put your hands beneath your knees, trying to get your snowboard up in the air.
  • Step #4: Now turn the snowboard as soon as it is airborne. Plant the nose or the tail of the board down in the snow for leverage.
  • Step #5: Now you should continue to roll over onto your side until the snowboard is on the toe side and you are facing toward the top of the hill.
  • Step #6: Finally, you have managed to switch from the heel edge to the toe edge. As you rise from the slope, use your hands to gain some support.

This is the most basic way that you can switch edges on the slope without having to remove and replace your bindings. This will allow you to change sides much more easily when you end up on the wrong edge.
