Snowboarding 101 – Learning to Skate

snowedMastering the concept of skating from point A to point B is a really useful skill that you can learn when it has to do to snowboarding. You are going to have to know how to skate whenever it comes to making transfers mid-mountain from one lift to another, or crossing a flat to a lift over from a base lodge, or when you are trying to get yourself moving again, if you happen to be caught on what is known as a cat track. This is a useful technique that you can practice that will also make it possible for you to get a better feel for gliding your snowboard forward along the flat before you end up attempting the exact same motion while you are on a more gradual slope.

Here are a few tips that are going to help you learn how to skate with your snowboard:

  • The first thing that you are going to want to do is to attach your foot in the front to your snowboard bindings, and then you should leave the back foot completely free.
  • Now you are going to want to create a skating motion. This can be done by putting your front foot just in front of your body while your back foot is being used to move you forward. Skating and sliding on your board with only one foot attached is going to be something that you are going to need to learn how to do because it is something that you are going to want to be able to do relatively often.
  • Every time that you are going to need to enter a ski lift or exit a ski lift, or to travel over short distances on uphill slopes or level slopes, you are going to want to be able to skate.
  • You can try to skate around, but you are going to want to make sure that the back foot never goes ahead of the front foot. You are going to want to make sure that you are only taking small steps using your back foot.
  • As you begin to improve, you are going to find it possible to learn how you can take much bigger steps and you will be able to really kick using your back foot.
  • You are also going to want to make sure that you are keeping your leg bent slightly and placing most of the weight of your body on the foot in the front. This is going to help you maintain your balance.

As your skills begin to improve you will also be able to increase your speed, and you will also be capable of placing your back foot on a Snowboard Stomp Pad or possibly pressing it against your Snowboard Binding back if you do not possess a stomp pad. Next, you can try to keep both of your feet on the board much more easily. Try to crouch and then rise up while you are sliding on the snowboard.
