Skiing Safety

skitunnelAlthough skiing tends to have a relatively low rate of injury in comparison to other similar recreational activities, there are still thousands of skiers that become injured every single year. The nature of skiing means that you are always going to be at some degree of risk, but there are a number of things that you can do in order to minimize the risk of ending up with an injury on the slopes.

First and foremost, you need to check to make sure that you have all of the right equipment for hitting the slopes.
Additionally, you are going to need to make sure that all of your equipment is in good and working order and that you are wearing all of the proper attire. You need to remember that your skis, your bindings and your boots should all be custom tailored for your weight and your height as well as your level of expertise. You should also make sure to have all of these pieces of gear checked out by someone at a certified shop before you use them again. If you go any prolonged period of time without wearing your skiing gear, then you absolutely need to make sure that your gear is checked out properly before you don it again. Your clothing should absolutely be water resistant and wind resistant, and it should be keeping you adequately warmed. The most important places to keep warm are your head, your hands and your feet above all else because these parts of your body are particularly susceptible to the cold air.

Another important safety point is to make sure that you know how to ski, and that you actually feel confident doing so. It is best to learn how to ski from someone who is certified. Improving your technique and your skill on the slopes is going to lessen the chances that you will make any mistakes that could result in sustaining and injury. Research studies haven proven that the people who take more ski lessons are significantly at a less risk of getting an injury than the people who have had less skiing lessons.

Another consideration to make is that you should only be skiing at a speed that is safe in relation to a number of considerations. You should be skiing at a speed that is accommodating to your ability, your experience, how many skiers are on the slopes around you, what conditions the slopes are in and what the weather is like. You should never make any irrational or unpredictable moves or decisions and you should never stop unless it is actually necessary. Just as with driving in traffic, it is vitally important that you obey all of the posted signs that you encounter while you are on the slopes, especially the ones that you find at the top of the mountain, the bottom of the mountain and any areas where the slopes merge. If you end up on a slope that makes you question the integrity of your safety, do not attempt it.
