Skiing Safety 101

safetynetAlthough there is a relatively low rate of injury rate associated with skiing in comparison to other types of recreational activities, every year thousands of skiers are injured in one way or another. The nature of this sport means that you are always going to be at some degree of risk, but there are a few things that you can do in order to minimize your risk of sustaining some type of injury.

First and foremost, you are going to want to check to ensure that you have all of the right equipment. Moreover, you need to make sure that all of your equipment is in good working order, and that the attire that you are wearing is appropriate for what you are attempting to achieve. Remember that your skiing boots, your bindings and also your skis should all be custom tailored for you and you only, meaning that they should be ideal for your height, your weight and your personal level of expertise. You should make sure that you have them checked out by a certified ski shop employee before you use them again at any point where they have not been in use for a prolonged period of time. Your clothing that you wear needs to be resistant to water as well as wind, and it should keep you warm without being stifling. Your head, your hands and your feet are especially important because these parts of your body are susceptible to the freezing conditions.

Next, you need to be realistic about your skiing capabilities. You need to make sure that you know how to ski properly and that you feel confident on the slopes. You shouldn't learn from a family member or a friend, but rather should learn from a certified skiing instructor for the best results. Improving on your technique and your skill is going to lessen the chance that you will make a mistake resulting in some kind of an injury. Research has proven over time that people who take more skiing lessons have a much greater risk associated with sustaining an injury than people who have not taken as many lessons.

Make sure that you are only skiing at a speed that is compatible to your experience, how many skiers are around you on the slopes, what condition the slope is in and what condition the weather is in. You should avoid making rash maneuvers or unpredictable maneuvers and you should never stop unless you have to. Obey all of the posted signs just like with traffic and make sure that you are aware of what is around you in order to be safe.

It is also important that you remain adequately hydrated in order to get the most out of your skiing excursion. When you take these steps to protect yourself, they really go a long way to keeping you safe and sound on the slopes.
