Skiing Lexicon pt 5

snowboarrHere is a skiing and snowboarding lexicon of terms that will help prepare you for the upcoming skiing and snowboarding season.

Shaped Skis - These are relatively new and fairly improved skis that are characterized as having some type of an hourglass shape, and they are supposedly designed with the purpose of easier turning in mind.

Schuss - This means to ski straight down the slope without doing any kind of turning.

Six Pack - This is a chair lift that is characterized as being able to carry six people all at once.

Ski In - Ski Out - This is lodging that is on the slopes or near the slopes, and it allows skiers to ski right in or right out of their accommodations. Definition for this one is going to vary based on the resort, so call ahead to make sure that you know what you are contending with before you book a Ski In/Ski Out accommodation.

Snowboarding - Snowboarding is characterized by skiing with only a single ski, which is shorter and wider and involves fixing both feet in a single position that is similar in nature to skateboarding or surfing.

Snow Plough - This is a maneuver for breaking that involves moving the tips of the skis together to form a triangular shape, and it is also referred to as a wedge shape or a pizza shape.

Snorkeling - When the powder runs up your body, blurring your vision while you are skiing or snowboarding, this is known as snorkeling.

Stem Christie - This is a basic turn that begins with you creating a wedge and then is completed when you skid on both of your uphill ski edges until your skis have become parallel.

Telemark Skiing - This is a type of discipline for skiing where your heel is not fixed to your ski. It requires a completely different type of technique in comparison to other types of skiing such as cross country and alpine skiing for example.

Terrain Park - This is an area that is maintained with a variety of different half pipes, jumps, rails and other specific obstacles for skiers and snowboarders to perform tricks on.

Traversing - This is a technique that involves moving yourself horizontally across a ski slope so that you can gain or lose only a minimal amount of actual elevation in the process.

Unweighting - This is the process of taking weight off of your ski, typically just prior to making or taking a turn.

Vertical Drop - This is described as being the vertical distance from the top of the mountain to the bottom of the mountain, or the top of the slope to the bottom of the slope.

Whiteout - This is described as a limited amount of visibility as a result of fog, flat light or snow conditions.

X-C - This is an abbreviation for cross country skiing.
