Skiing Lexicon pt 4

skioerHere is a skiing and snowboarding lexicon of terms that will help prepare you for the upcoming skiing and snowboarding season.

NASTAR -
This is a citizen racing program that has courses at a wide variety of different mountains, and they allow absolutely everyone to participate as well as to handicap themselves against a number of world-class level racing times.

Never Ever - This is a term that refers to someone who has never been skiing before and who is signing up for their very first skiing lesson.

Nordic Skiing - This is described as any type of skiing on flat terrain with the use of self produced power and no extra assistance from the slopes. There are two different techniques for cross country skiing, which are skating skiing and classic or striding skiing. Cross country skiing is much more aerobic in nature than alpine skiing and it requires narrower skis and lighter boots in general.

Out of Bounds - This is terrain that is outside of the boundary of a designated ski area. Out of bounds areas do not have any ski patrol or avalanche control, and most times these particular areas are illegal for you to be skiing in.

Pillows - These are the softer tops of moguls right after a fresh dump of powder.

Pizza - Pizza is performed when you slowly snowplow down the length of a slope. Pizza is something that is generally used by a number of skiing and snowboarding instructors when they are teaching younger children how to ski or snowboard.

Powder - Powder is the ideal condition for skiing which occurs right after a fresh snow dump.

Pre Release - This denotes any situation where your skis come unhinged earlier than you were actually anticipating.

Quad - A quad is a specific type of chair lift that is named thus because it is capable of carrying a total of four people.

Roller Skiing - This is a type of all season skiing that is generally performed by people that enjoy going cross country skiing, and they use it as a skiing discipline to allow them to train during the off skiing when there is no snow for them to practice on.

Rope Tow - This is a lift that is going to be found more commonly on green rated slopes as well as bunny hills, though it can also be found to reach all the way down to the more difficult types of terrain. Rope tows are also known as surface lifts because the snowboarder or skier never actually leaves the snow but rather they are towed back up the slope by holding onto a rope that pulls them up.

Rail Slide - This is a technique that is performed by sliding snowboard or skis across a rail made of wood or metal, and this is generally performed in terrain parks.
