Here is a skiing and snowboarding lexicon of terms that will help prepare you for the upcoming skiing and snowboarding season.
Groomed Slope - A groomed slope is a term that refers to a type of slope terrain that is now smooth as a result of having recently being groomed.
Hard Packed - The term hard packed is a euphemism that is used in order to describe conditions that are icy, and hard packed conditions generally occur when there is no recent snowfall and the snow has been packed down tight.
Headwall - A headwall is a steep type of cliff, usually found at the uppermost part of what is known as a cirque.
Heli Skiing - Heli skiing is a discipline for skiing that involves helicopter transportation to one of the highest slopes of the mountain. Heli skiing is generally known for providing skiers and snowboarders with fresh tracks to ski on.
Herringbone - This is a skiing technique that has been named after the marks that are left behind by the skis when a skier happens to nudge in an upward direction through the snow.
Indie Grab - An indie grab is a term in the industry that describes grabbing your skis or your snowboard on the outside edge under the boot while you are in the process of executing a jump.
Jib - Jib or jibbing is a term that refers to a combination of tricks or to a single trick that is done while you are on skis or on a snowboard, generally done while you are at a terrain park although this is not actually a requirement.
Jump Training - This is a method involved in turning that involves jumping both of your skis into the air, and what this does is allows for you to make a much quicker change of direction. Jump turning is a method of turning that is typically used when you are dealing with more extreme types of terrain.
Kick Turning - This is an about face type of turn that is made while you are stationary. Kick turning is executed by lifting one of your skis and then reversing its direction before doing the same thing with the other ski.
Kicker - This is described as being the sharply angled end of your turn, which allows for you to gain a significant amount of height in the process.
Liftie - A liftie is the operator of a ski lift or gondola lift.
Mashed Potatoes - This is a euphemism or slang term that is used to refer to snow that is wet and heavy.
Milk Run - The milk run is the very first run of the day.
Moguls - Moguls are mounds of snow or bumps in the snow, and they come in a wide variety of different sizes depending on the difficulty of the slope.
