Here is a skiing and snowboarding lexicon of terms that will help prepare you for the upcoming skiing and snowboarding season.
Crud - This is a type of snow that is characterized by possessing an uneven surface that typically encompasses some soft lumps of powder like snow as well as patches that are more icy or slippery in nature.
DIN Settings - Also known as Deutsche Industrie Normen, this is a scale that is used in order to insure that all ski bindings are capable of releasing under the same amount of force at every ski destination all over the world.
Dump - This is characterized as being an unusually heavy or unusually large snowfall.
Edge - An edge is a metal strip that can be found on the bottom sides of both skis and snowboards, and this metal strip is used for the purpose of carving.
Ego Bumps - Ego bumps are small and well spaced moguls that you will find on an intermediate slope. The purpose behind these ego pumps is to be generally much easier for beginners to ski than the moguls that you are going to find on the more difficult types of slopes.
Epic - This word is used to describe a day that is characterized by large amounts of snow or other types of conditions that make the day unforgettable or otherwise out of the norm.
Fall Line - The fall line is a line that a ball would follow if it were rolling down the entire length of the slope, or otherwise the fall line can be described as being the quickest method of getting down the mountain from top to bottom.
Figure Eight - Tandem skiers create a figure eight pattern when their tracks are viewed from above. The numerical eight appears when you view the tracks from above.
Figure Eleven - When a skier does not make any turns, the tracks that are left behind are known as a figure eleven.
First Tracks - When a skier happens to be the first person to ski a specific area in an area where the snow is fresh, this is known as first tracks. Another name for this same occurrence is freshies.
Freestyle Skiing - This is described as a skiing discipline that makes use of aerial acrobatics combined with downhill skiing techniques.
Gaper - This is a skier that stops frequently so that they can enjoy the view that they get from the top of the mountain.
Gondola - A gondola is a lift that is enclosed and that is suspended above the mountain using a cable, and used in order to transport the passengers down and up from the top to the bottom of the mountain and back again.
Grass Skiing - This is a discipline for all seasons that is done on grass using a specialized type of equipment.
