Skiing Lexicon pt 1

snowcoverskijumpsThere are a lot of things that you should do in order to prepare yourself for the slopes this upcoming ski season, and one of those things is to become well versed in the lingo associated with skiing and other winter sports. Here is a skiing lexicon that will help prepare you for the upcoming skiing and snowboarding season.

Alpine Skiing - Alpine skiing is a type of downhill skiing where both the toe and the heel of your ski boots are affixed to your skis.

Après Ski - This is the nightlife that follows a day full of skiing, such as going shopping, going drinking, listening to music or simply relaxing in a nice warm Jacuzzi.

Base - This is the average depth of the snow on the mountain, and it is also described as being the bottom of whatever mountain where the lodge is going to be located.

Basket - This is a round and generally flat type of disk that is located near the tip of the ski pole, and it is designed to keep the pole from sinking down too far into the snow.

Bowl Skiing - Bowl skiing is skiing when you are on wide and bowl shaped slopes that may or may not have trees.

Brain Bucket - This is another word for helmet.

Bunny Slope - The bunny slope is the area of the ski mountain that has a more gradual decline, and it is generally best indicated for beginner skiers that are just learning the basic skiing techniques.

Carve - Carving is the act of digging the edge of your ski or your snowboard into packed snow for the purpose of turning yourself while skiing or snowboarding.

Catching an Edge - When your ski or snowboard edge accidentally digs down into the snow, this is referred to as catching an edge, and unfortunately it nearly always results in a fall or at least a near fall.

Cirque - This is a bowl-shape or an amphitheater that is sculpted out of the mountain terrain.

Cliff Hucking - This is described as being a move that experienced skiers do, or that overambitious beginners may do, as it involves skiers jumping directly off of a cliff while on their skis.

Corn - This is snow that is characterized by granules that are large like the size of a corn kernel, and this is especially common during the spring months.

Cross Country Skiing - This is described as any type of skiing on flat terrain with the use of self produced power and no extra help from the slopes. There are two different techniques for cross country skiing, which are skating skiing and classic or striding skiing. Cross country skiing is much more aerobic in nature than alpine skiing and it requires narrower skis and lighter boots in general.
