The turning point in Bryon Friedman's life was when he moved to Utah and began to take advantage of its prime skiing mountains. Bryon was only nine years old, but he quickly found the mountains of Utah to be home to him. Since then, Bryon has mixed schooling and ski training, up through college. Eventually he made it onto the United States skiing team, winning two US championships right from the start.
Bryon's skiing career has been wrought with challenges. In 2000, Bryon tore an ACL mid season, but despite this he went on to ski in 18 more races. In 2001, he tore an ACL, while in 2003; he rolled his ankle which required surgery to remove a bone spur. The biggest accident of his career was a tumble that broke his lower right leg and his hand. Over the course of two and a half years, Bryon received intensive physical therapy. Now, it is hoped that the skier will be able to start skiing again.
Where He Is Now -
In 2004, Bryon obtained the gold Olympic medal for the downhill speed. From there he went on to compete in the world cup in 2004 and 2005. However, in 2005, on the slopes at Chamonix, France, Bryon suffered an injury that caused him to miss the last two remaining months of the 2005 season, as well as the 2006 and 2007 seasons. As a result the accident, he was left with a broken hand and leg. However, this coming winter season may see his return as after two and a half years worth of physical therapy. It is according to his coaches that it is now up to him and whether or not he decides to push himself.
Career Highlights -
To date, Bryon has in his possession seven first place trophies. In 2001, Bryon began his professional career with four FIS-B wins. From that point it was two years before his next second place victory at the 2003 EC DG in Altenmarkt, AUT. In 2004, Bryon took home the 2004 US gold medal in the downhill combined event. In 2004 and 2005, Bryon had a place in the World cup, but had to leave the sport because of a serious injury to his leg. He has since recovered and is gearing up to get back out there, refusing to allow his injury to keep him out of the game.
