This is a guide to sidestepping on the heel side. Side slipping is all about sliding along the slope's fall line. This is an exercise that is going to teach you about using the edges of your snowboard in order to control your speed as you go downhill.
Step #1 - When you are just starting out, you are going to want to learn on a moderately steep slope. Your feet should be attached to your board. Face toward the downhill and sit down on the ground. Bend your legs so that your snowboard is sitting on its heel edge. Make sure that you are maintaining your balance.
Step #2 - Now you are going to want to dig the heel edge of your board deeper into the snow. This is going to give you a firmer hold before you decide to continue. Plant your hands down into the snow so that you can support the upper body.
Step #3 - Now you want to move your hands closer to your body, using them so that you can balance yourself while you are lifting yourself up from the ground gradually. You should be distributing your weight evenly on your knees so that you can help to maintain your balance.
Step #4 - Now you are going to want to attempt standing up. This is not an easy position to make, but it will be mastered through practicing. Just make sure that you are finding your balance and that you are holding your position upright while the board is maintained on the heel edge.
Step #5 - Now you need to learn how you can control the snowboard and the descent speed while you are using this heel edge. Your downhill speed is going to increase as you decrease the angle of the edge. Push your snowboard down further to gain more speed.
Step #6 - Increase the angle of the snowboard's edge to decrease your speed. Learn how to slow down carefully by continuing to increase the snowboard heel edge angle until the point where you come to a full stop.
Step #7 - Now you have finally reached the very last step of this exercise. You should keep the board on the heel edge while you are lowering your body gradually. You can place your hands down on the ground in order to support your body.
At this point, now you know how you can control your snowboard. It is generally not going to matter if you learn how to sideslip on the heel edge before you learn the toe edge, because you are going to learn both of these methods as you practice. Make sure that you are practicing snowboard control and making use out of both of your edges when it comes to controlling your speed as you move down the slope.
