This is a guide to sidestepping on the toe side. Side slipping is all about sliding along the slope's fall line. This is an exercise that is going to teach you about using the edges of your snowboard in order to control your speed as you go downhill. There are a number of advantages that come with learning this skill, primarily that you will learn the importance behind edge awareness. Before you do any traverses, this is a skill that you are definitely going to want to know as it is going to help you improve other snowboarding skills, techniques and tactics as well.
Step #1 - When you are just starting out, you are going to want to learn on a moderately steep slope. Your feet are going to want to be attached to the snowboard bindings. You should be facing in an uphill direction and your board should be directly across the slope's fall line. Now bend your knees until you are touching the ground, making sure that you are keeping your balance.
Step #2 - While you are down on your knees you should dig the toe edge of your snowboard deeper into the slope. This is going to give you a firmer hold and a more stable position before continuing. Plant your hands down into the snow, supporting your upper body with your arms.
Step #3 - Now you should get up on the toe edge, moving hands toward your body on the sides. Balance yourself with hands while lifting your knees from the ground. Extend legs and attempt to stand. Make sure that you are maintaining balance and that your board remains on the toe edge.
Step #4 - Now attempt to stand up completely. This is not an easy position for you to make, but through practice it can be mastered. Find your balance, then hold your upright position while keeping the board on the toe edge.
Step #5 - Learn how to control your snowboard and your descent speed with the use of your toe edge. Decrease the edge angle to increase the speed at which you go downhill. You will descend much more quickly as you push your snowboard further on the toe edge.
Step #6 - Now you should increase the angle edge of your snowboard, taking note that there is now a decrease in the amount of speed you have. You are going to continue to slow down as the angle of the snowboard's toe edge is increased.
Step #7 - Finally, while you keep the board on the toe side, you are going to want to gradually move down, putting your hands down onto the ground in order to support your body. At this point, you have learned how to make use of your toe edge for the purpose of descending the slope.
Edge awareness is clearly one of the most vital things that you can learn in snowboard instruction. You should practice side slipping, taking advantage of your toe edge to descend the slope with greater speed control.
