Both skiing and snowboarding can seem really similar when it comes to the type of safety gear that you are going to need, but this is actually a relatively incorrect assumption for you to be making. The truth is that the safety gear associated with snowboarding is actually really different in comparison to skiing because there are no balance poles in snowboarding and that means that the common injuries are going to be different from one sport to the next. Here is an overview of the safety gear that you are going to want to consider both for skiing and for snowboarding as well.
Safety Gear for Snowboarding
The first priority on your mind should be to get a helmet that you can snowboard in. Head injuries are one of many types of injuries that you can sustain while you are going snowboarding. Because of the fact that falling down is so easy, especially when you are just a beginner to the sport, the likelihood of sustaining a head injury is unfortunately quite high. Since there are not any poles for you to use in order to maintain your balance on the slopes, you may end up falling significantly more than a skier would. Snowboarders unfortunately end up hitting their heads a lot when they are falling. How serious the head injury is will rely heavily on the type of the snow, the depth of the snow and how fast you are going while you are falling. The thing that is going to massively reduce the amount of damage that you sustain is simply to wear a helmet!
The next thing that you are going to want to consider is to have proper protection for your wrists. Wrist injuries are sustained about as often as head injuries because snowboarders have to attempt to catch themselves when they are falling. They end up falling down on their wrists, and their wrists can become twisted or otherwise injured in the process. As many as 40 percent of all injuries sustained while snowboarding are wrist related. You need under glove wrist guards as well as gloves that have wrist protectors built into them. You really cannot pass up good wrist protection, as these wrist guards will go a long way in keeping your hands and wrists safe from bad injuries.
Safety Gear for Skiing
Just like with snowboarding, you are going to want to wear a helmet. This helmet is going to provide you with impact protection should you fall, or run into something like a tree or another skier. There are also knee pads, wrist pads, butt pads and a number of other types of padding that are available for you to use when you are worried about your safety on the slopes. Goggles also happen to be important since having good visibility is so vitally important while you are on the slopes. The best goggles are those that wrap around your face, keeping your eyes from being blinded by the snow.
