Preventing Neck Injuries While Skiing

neckbraceJust like with any physical sport, people who go skiing can sustain neck injuries while they are out on the slopes. Neck injuries are more than capable of bringing about an abrupt and rather painful end to your enjoyable day on the slopes. The best way that you can possibly prevent neck injuries while you are out skiing is to know how they occur so that you can be prepared.

First and foremost, your timing may actually predispose you to certain neck injuries while you are on the slopes. Are you pre-conditioned or otherwise physically prepared to hit the slopes today? If you are simply a weekend warrior that is not frequently going out to ski, or if you are not an avid skier, then you are going to need to physically prepare yourself, especially in the earliest days of the ski season. Your neck is just as important to prepare as any other part of your body if you want to survive the ski season without an unfortunate injury.

For example, you should be practicing good posture at all times, all throughout the year. This is a habit that will allow you to avoid sustaining neck pain as a result of regular daily hobbies and work. Then, when it is time for you to go skiing, your healthy posture will be capable of reducing your predisposition to certain neck injuries.

Does your neck feel as if it is rested? Are the muscles in your neck feeling loose and relaxed? If you have been traveling, or if you have slept in an odd or uncomfortable position, then you are going to be at risk for developing a neck injury while skiing. This is also true if you have chronic tension problems in your neck. According to many physicians, flexibility as well as strength in the shoulder, neck and upper extremities is vitally important if you want to prevent the possibility of sustaining a neck injury while you are skiing.

Furthermore, it has been said that a neck injury can cause weakness and stiffness, meaning that if the neck was chronically tight before the injury occurred, then the recovery process may actually be impeded.

Another way that you can predispose yourself to a neck injury during the ski season is by playing more than one type of physical sport at a time. As athletic seasons overlap, for example, many youth are obtaining sports injuries and this is causing more and more injuries on the slope as an unfortunate result. Stretching and strengthening the neck is vitally important, then, to prevent neck injuries from occurring when these sports star overachievers hit the slopes for the first time in the ski season.

If you do manage to hurt yourself while skiing, you need to ask for help immediately from a real medical professional. Neck injuries are capable of being not only serious, but also quite fatal if they are not properly cared for and treated. You need to get the appropriate medical treatment in order to make sure that you are okay, as symptoms do not always present themselves immediately.
