Traversing on the Heel Side

heelsideTraversing is a skill that makes it possible for you to move along the fall line while you are gradually descending. Traversing is all about riding diagonally across a slope, taking yourself slowly from one of the slope's sides to the other while descending. You can traverse in two different ways, heel side or toe side depending on the position that you are making and depending on which board edge you end up using.

Step #1 - When you are traversing using your snowboard's heel edge, the first thing that you are going to want to consider is that you should be looking in the direction that you want to go in. This is absolutely one of the most crucial things that you should be doing when it comes to transferring. You should also be spreading your arms out in order to help you with maintaining your balance as you move down and across the slope.

Step #2 - Next what you are going to want to do is to turn your head and your upper body in the direction that you are wanting to travel to. You should be shifting more of your weight onto your leading foot and then moving together along with your other foot. You should be remembering to keep your snowboard angled in a downhill direction, but just slightly.

Step #3 - Now you are going to want to return the board to the original position, which should be across the slope's fall line. Prepare to move across to the other side of the slope again. You should be once again looking in the direction that you want to go in. You should also be spreading your arms out in order to help you with maintaining your balance as you move down and across the slope.

Step #4 - Now, just like in the second step, you are going to want to turn both your head and your upper body in the direction that you want to travel in. You should be, once again, shifting your weight onto your leading foot and moving together using your other foot. Your board should be angled in a downhill way, but only just slightly.

You are going to want to continue to traverse using the heel edge of your snowboard, as this is going to make it possible for you to control your direction and your speed as well while improving upon your balance. You are going to want to make sure that you are completely comfortable in doing both heel side traverses and toe side traverses before you move on to any other types of snowboard exercises. This is a building block for learning control on the snowboard and the slope, so make sure you are competent in traversing before you move onto more difficult techniques.
