One of the biggest complaints that exist among new skiers is that they end up getting cold, and they end up getting wet. Keeping yourself dry is a good way to keep your self warm. Here is a guide to staying dry on the slopes when skiing.
Cold Weather Tips
You are going to want to avoid wearing any kind of fuzzy fabrics on the outside of your layers. Snow has a tendency to cling to these types of fabrics and eventually the snow is going to melt and create water, which will still cling to you. Instead, you should try to choose a soft shell rather than a polar fleece, or something similar to it that is going to feel slick rather than fuzzy so that snow and ice won't stick. You may think that a little snow on the outside is no big deal, but when the snow melts and you're freezing, you'll wish you listened.
Skiing Tips for Warmer Weather
The main thing that you are going to want to consider when it comes to skiing in the early season or in the late season is that you are going to need waterproofing that is really lightweight in nature. Unfortunately, it's all too easy for you to pay a lot of money for equipment that is graded as waterproof without really keeping you try. Just because a garment says that it is waterproof, that does not necessarily mean that it is going to keep you safe from the water. For example, clothing can be called waterproof if it resists 1 psi of water.
Better company names like Gore-Tex aren't even going to consider a certain product to be waterproof unless it can resist up to 30 psi worth of water. If you want to avoid spending a lot of money on gear that you're not going to wear often, choose a lightweight rain jacket rather than an oversized skiing jacket. A Marmot Precip jacket is a good example of this. If you do not enjoy going skiing or do not plan on going often, then at least you will have a good shell that is going to prove useful any time it gets wet, not just in the snow.
You absolutely cannot underestimate the power behind a good pair of waterproof gloves and waterproof pants. You are going to come in contact with wet chair lifts, wet seats, wet handles and wet door knobs and a lot more water than you may initially realize. It is definitely okay for you to skimp on the insulation during warmer weather outside, but you absolutely cannot compromise when it comes to the waterproof nature of your outer shell if you want to stay dry.
