One of the biggest complaints that exist among new skiers is that they end up getting cold, and they end up getting wet. Keeping yourself dry is a good way to keep your self warm. Here is a guide to staying dry on the slopes when skiing.
How to Keep Yourself Dry
The first thing that you are going to need to consider is how cold it is going to be while you're outside. This could potentially sound counter intuitive to you, but the colder that it is, the less waterproofed your clothing is going to need to be. Conversely, the warmer that it ends up being, the more waterproofed your clothing is going to need to be. When the temperatures are cooler, the water is less likely to actually be water, but rather will stick to being ice or snow. When the temperatures begin to climb past freezing, such as during spring skating, then there is going to be a lot more slush built up by the end of the day. You are going to have an increased amount of contact with water on these particular days.
General Tips
First of all, you should always have a wicking layer that is next to your skin. This could be running apparel or hot chillies or anything like that. Synthetic fabrics are generally best for this purpose. The purpose behind the wicking layer is going to be to keep your sweat off of your skin, and to keep water dispersed over a larger area of fabric if you do get wet so that your body will help the water evaporate much more quickly thanks to your body heat. Moisture wicking really comes in handy when you get wet, not only keeping the icy water from keeping you cold, and helping to wick the sweat moisture that you produce as well.
Always take care to keep the snow out. You can look for features such as jackets with powder skirts, gloves with long gauntlets, ski pants with gaiters and so on. What these are going to do is help to get the snow out of your clothing, because if the snow manages to get in, then you are going to get wet. Dressing in layers is always a really good idea for keeping the snow out and keeping yourself warm and dry.
Tips for Cold Weather
Just because it is cold in the air outside, that does not mean you should just scotch guard your normal jeans and throw them on to ski in. What it does mean is that you are going to need to cough up some dough in order to get a good sturdy jacket and the clothing that's going to keep you warm and dry the best.
