Granlibakken is located in Tahoe City, CA
Phone: (530) 581-7533
About the Resort:
Even if you can't pronounce the name, this is one of the easiest resorts to recognize in the Tahoe area, thanks in a large part to their great reputation and their commitment to their visitors. In operation since 1927, this stellar resort has been the go-to destination for locals and travelers alike and there are few resorts in this area that can hold a candle to Granlibakken. The entire complex is only 74 acres, but they use every square inch and go overboard with their service to ensure that their guests are happy.
What You Need to Know:
Granlibakken is Norwegian for "sheltered by trees," and this family run resort is home to many different types of wildlife and is extremely picturesque. This resort opens a little late in the year, usually around mid-December and stays open until the first of April. There are two main lifts, and they serve around 400 people an hour. On the rare occasion that you do have to wait, it's usually not for very long.
There is one main trail at Granlibakken, but it is split into three distinct levels so that everyone can enjoy it. This is also a haven for sledders, and there is even a snowplay area where kids can build their own snowmen and have fun. The fees at this resort are some of the lowest in California, and although the resort is small, they more than make up for this fact with their service.
Tips for Beginners:
This is an incredibly friendly resort for beginners and it's one of the best places to go if you want to be able to learn with a smaller group of students. It's not overcrowded like a lot of resorts and the instructors are very good and very patient. Kids are more than welcome here and if you're not quite ready to start skiing, you can give snowshoeing a try first.
The trail here is very mild and will not be terribly difficult even for those that have never strapped on skis before. We highly recommend this resort to families and to those that are interested in getting started with skiing.
