With the New Year, we see a new January packed with many events for the snowboarder to prepare for and the fan to keep watch over. Included in the events is the eighth annual FIS snowboard world championships, held in Sungwoo, Gangwon Province from the 17th to the 24th. Also happening in January is the World Cup at Kreischberg. There will be two races in parallel at the Styrian resort. The parallel Grand Slalom and the Parallel Slalom will also be held. Alpine racers have quite the month before them.Bad Gastein in Salzburg country side will also host two events in Janurary, races three and four of the Snowboard Cross. In Japan, snowboarders will be able to enjoy the action of the third Halfpipe contest. These competitions will feature some of the top snowboarders in the world.
For the 2009 Snowboard FIS world cup, the best of the best are gearing up to give it their all. For the Kreischberg competition, some of the best womens snow boarders include Doris Guenther, World Cup leader, Heidi Neururer, Parallel Slalom World Champion, in addition to Nicolien Sauerbreij, Kimiko Zakreski, Michelle Gorgone, Fraenzi Maegert-Kohli and Anke Karstens. The mens competition will feature Rok Flander, Adam Smith, Siegfried Grabner, Canada’s Matthew Morison and Jasey Anderson and Simon Schoch.
The competition in Bad Gastein could be the third win for Mario Fuchs, winner for the past two years. It also might not be the Aussie's lucky season, having failed to get a great result so far this winter. Those who may best him include Olympic Champion Seth Wescott, Stian Sivertzen, David Speiser, Markus Schairer and Mateusz Ligocki. Lady snowboarders will include World Champion Lindsey Jacobellis, Helene Olafsen, Zoe Gillings, Sandra Frei, Dominique Maltais, Maelle Ricker and Mellie Francon.
Boarders from all countries are poised to stake their claim in the Japan match off against the locals who have been training hard. Kazuumi Fujita just pushed Gregory Bretz and Jeff Batchelor off the top spot on the podium, this year should see quite the competition in the men's category. The same can be said for the women's side, as Chinese boarder Zhifeng Sun overtook Soko Yamaoka of Japan and Swiss boarder Manuela Pesko.
In Japan, North-Americans as well as Europeans will try their best to challenge the strong squad of the hosting country for the triumph. Last year, Kazuumi Fujita (JPN) edged off Jeff Batchelor (CAN) and Gregory Bretz (USA) to the follow-up podium spots. On the women’s side, also a rider from Asia was victorious. However, the winner wasn’t coming from Japan. Chinese Zhifeng Sun grabbed Gold ahead of Soko Yamaoka (JPN) and meanwhile retired Swiss Manuela Pesko.
The winter competition will be one of the most exciting seasons so far. Powers are shifting in some areas, while in other areas attempts will be made for the 1st place win. More and more the world is observing the true talent and skill that goes into the sport of snowboarding.
