Eco-Friendly Ski Tips

Recently, a new controversy has erupted as to how “green” the sport of skiing really is. A group in France called skiers the “cancer of the slopes” and many have stated that the although skiers love the great outdoors, they may be the ones responsible for its demise. While this statement is certainly reactionary, experts have taken a look at the toll skiers take on a mountain and there is some cause for concern.

The main culprit appears not be just skiers, but the resorts that host them. In order to make snow, a resort must consume not only 4,000 cubic meters of water, but it requires 25,000 kilowatts of electricity to create snow for just one hectare. As global warming continues, resorts are finding it necessary to create more snow just to stay in business and this is compounding the problem. Another major concern is the use of ski lifts, and the fuel that is required to run them.

While skiers can’t be blamed for these problems entirely, many do cause disruption of eco-systems on ski runs, even perhaps without knowing it. While we many not be able to undo the damage that has been caused, or change the need for making snow, there are a few things that skiers can do to become more eco-friendly.

1. Visit resorts that do not make snow, or make very little.

There are still many resorts in areas that receive more than 400 inches of snow annually and many of these only make about 2% of their own snow or less. By visiting these resorts, skiers can feel better about their efforts, even if it does not address the main problem. However, if resorts are pushed into finding more ways to be eco-friendly with snow creation, things may change. A lack of patronage would certainly force many into this decision.

2. Practice “leave no trace” Skiing.

Whether you cross country ski, or you love downhill racing, you can be a credit to the environment instead of a deficit. Make sure that you do not litter on the trails and that you do not disturb the local environment. Stick to the provided trails and avoid going off-trail to explore. Many eco-systems are quite fragile and it is best to stick to the marked trails anywhere for better safety.

3. Push for change.

If you have resorts in your area that do make a good portion of their own snow, you can start a local movement to push for change. Whether it’s shifting lifts from gas power to solar, or finding alternatives to traditional snow making, you can make a difference in the environment if you make the effort to have your voice heard.

Our world is changing, and global warming is having a big impact on trails, whether we acknowledge its existence or not. By taking the steps to monitor your own actions, and inspire others to do the same thing, we can preserve our trails and mountains for many generations to come.
