When it comes to dressing for going out and skiing during the spring, the key is going to be layering your attire. This is more true for spring skiing than any other type of skiing. You are going to want to forget about your heavy insulated clothing and down jacket. Instead, you should be traveling light in order to make sure that you are enjoying a full day on the soft spring snow. Think about the snow freeze and melt cycle and make sure that you have all of the temperatures covered when you are packing for your spring skiing trip. The natural night time cold is capable of lingering well into the morning, and it may even be accompanied by a really chilly wind that feels particularly cold in the shadows.
Layering for Spring Skiing
You are going to want to begin with a good base layer capable of wicking moisture, as well as a warmer mid layer that is going to keep your body heat stored within your clothing during cold periods of time, even if the cold happens to last all throughout the day. As the temperature begins to rise, you can remove this mid layer of clothing if you feel as if you are overheating. Many outer shells possess armpit zippers, and you can open these up as well.
For outer layers you are definitely going to want to have a waterproof shell. The weather in the spring time is capable of being fickle, so think about periods where it could be raining or there could be wet snow. You are definitely going to want to be kept warm and dry, especially if you end up falling in the rain or the wet snow, so make sure that your outer layer is waterproof for this particular purpose. If your jacket has a hood on it, make sure that you use it, otherwise it will catch this wet stuff and it will end up running down your back every time it gets full, or when you least expect it otherwise. If your hood is one that can be detached, by all means remove it if you are not going to be using it.
You should make sure that any ski pants that you wear have gaiters that have snaps or elastic on them. They should have both inside and outside leg zippers so that heat can be exhausted. You should choose pants with sealed and seamed pockets that will protect your wallets and other important things that you keep in your pockets. A good second choice is any pants that have covered zippers or overlapped zippers.
Spring skiing can be really fun, but it is vitally important that you dress the part if you want to be able to handle absolutely anything that Mother Nature throws at you.
