January eighth will be the second part of the Alli Winter Dew tour, held on Mount Snow, VT. This peak was the home to the rival competition ESPN Winter X Games in 2000 and 2001, which has since moved to Aspen. For the athletes who are competing, they must be experiencing some kind of déjà vu, for it seems that every competition this season features the same world class competitors.
Back in Breckenridge, CO, Olympic gold medalist Shaun White was defeated by a hair by Danny Davis in the snowboard super pipe. White did not leave empty handed, having won the gold medal in the slope style event. For the women, Gretchen Bleiler was followed by Kelly Clark and Elena Hight in the superpipe, while Spencer O'Brian won the gold for women's slopestyle. Freeski superpipe gold's were awarded to Sarah Burke and Tanner Hall, and freeski slope style was awarded to Kaya Turski and Bobby Brown. Vermont locals Clark, Ross Powers and Hanah Teter should do well; the state has produced many world class riders.
The last leg of the Winter Dew Tour will be held at Northstar at Tahoe, California, with the Toyota Championship on February 19 through the 22. Despite Toyota's rough start in 2009, they are still dutifully committed to financing the project. They wish to continue providing funds and help the sport continue to grow. Competitions such as these help in attracting children to sports an encouraging active play versus a sedentary lifestyle.
In addition to competitions, the Winter Dew tour will play host to live musical performances along with a Festival Village. The village will be full of unique interactive games, events, food and athlete autographs. The Toyota booth will feature a platform to take guests and put them 30 feet above the crowds. There are plenty of games and chances for prizes as well as shopping opportunities for fans to acquire souvenirs. . As many as 20,000 are expected to attend the even, which is free and does not require a lift ticket.
For the 282 competitors, the Winter Dew Tour offers riders prizes totaling $1.5 million dollars. The snowboarders perform tricks inspired by skateboarders, and judges grade the trick based off of execution, trick elements, and the over all style of the trick. There is also risk of serious injury. Clarke, for example, broke his back after a bad landing following a jump. He walked away, but the compression fracture took months to heal. The skier also has six metal screws in his hand.
Among the competitors, there are 24 Olympians, 6 carrying Olympic medals. This sport has grown to foster Olympic talent, and hopefully this trend can continue on with other sports and competitions. These kinds of honors are what encourage the youth to start competing and become active in their lifestyles. All in all, we should see some real talent at the Winter Dew Games, and hopefully we will not be seeing any new injuries.
