Choosing the Right Snowboard
December 26th, 2011 | Snowboarding, Snowboards
Here's a hint when it comes to choosing the right snowboard: Stop paying attention to the pretty designs and start choosing snowboard gear that is going to meet your needs on the slopes instead.
Buying a brand new snowboard is a process that is fun and exciting, but it also involves making a pretty hefty investment as well. When you are faced with hundreds of different new snowboards at the pro shop, choosing the right board is something that can seem nearly impossible. With a little bit of research however, it really would not be difficult for you to narrow your choices down to only a handful of different snowboards, which will make your decision much simpler for you to make.
Define Yourself: In order to narrow down your personal choices so that the right snowboard can be chosen, you are going to need to define yourself as a snowboarder by deciding what type of snowboarding you do the most often. If you are particularly into freestyle forms of snowboarding for example, then the right snowboard for you is not going to be the same as someone that is an all mountain type of rider.
Check Out Catalogs: Snowboard companies tend to begin delivering their brand new catalogs and brochures in August, and the new gear begins to arrive several weeks later. You should take the time to stop by a local snowboarding shop, picking up some brochures and catalogs so that you can get a good head start in narrowing down the boards that you like. You should pick out a bunch of different boards from each of these catalogs, then wait until the equipment comes in to find out if you've made the right decisions.
Do Enough Research: There are plenty of places to conduct some snowboard research including snowboarding magazines such as Snowboarder Magazine and Transworld Snowboarding. They typically publish a buyer's guide annually in September or in October before the snowboarding season has officially started, and in the pages of these guides you will find a wealth of important information on nearly every model of snowboard that you will find in the upcoming season. Companies send new product information for testing to the magazines, so you can be sure that you will see real, legitimate information and product reviews that you can count on without any hype or marketing copy when you buy these buyer's guides. Take a list of boards you chose by looking in the buyer's guides and bring the list to the snowboard shop to see what you think about the boards that these companies recommended.
Picking a snowboard has to be about more than just looks. While you may want the board with the coolest design, what you really need to be caring about is your safety. Your board needs to be suited to you, and it needs to meet your own unique needs as a snowboarder in order for it to be beneficial in any way to you.
