Choosing Snowboarding Gear

Possessing the right pieces of snowboarding equipment the first time that you set out is absolutely essential to your safety and your wellbeing. The essential pieces of snowboarding gear include:

- Snowboard
- Boots
- Bindings
- Gloves
- Goggles
- Pants
- Jacket
- Helmet (Recommended, but not required).

What may not be as obvious as this simple list of equipment is how important it is that you select the right equipment. The first and possibly the most important choice to make is which snowboard you will use. The only thing that your snowboard knows is your weight, but not how tall you are or how good you are at riding. You want to stand a snowboard up on its end and measure how tall it is in comparison to your own height. If it comes up to your collar bone or below your chin, then it will be an easier board for turning, which is excellent for beginning riders, but it will not be ideal for higher speed stability. Boards that measure between your chin and your chose are average sized, meaning that they can handle most styles and conditions, but they may be too large and too stiff for a beginning rider. If you choose a board that is above your nose in length, then you will have a board that is excellent for deeper powder because it will allow you to float on top of the snow. Longer boards are definitely not ideal for beginners.

* Make sure that you consider your riding abilities, your weight, your height and the conditions that you will be riding in when you choose your snowboard.

Selecting your bindings and your boots is not going to be as complicated when you are new to snowboarding, because you do not really have a preference yet. Boots basically either come in stiff or soft variations. Stiff boots are ideal for carving, riding through chunky snow and going really fast. Soft boots are ideal for doing tricks because they allow for more movement and flexibility. If you are not sure about your bindings, ask a professional, because many manufacturers are coming out with new technologies and it can be a little difficult to tell which are good and which are worth passing on.

Choosing the rest of your necessary snowboarding equipment has more to do with the weather than anything else. Choosing your goggles, gloves, snowboarding pants and jacket should be based on the average climate and weather for the mountain of your choosing. Different parts of the world generate different types of snow. Some snow and air is moister than others. Wetter snow tends to require more water proofing in your apparel, while warmer gear is required for air that is rich in humidity. When selecting your goggles, make sure that you think about the amount of sun that you will be riding in. Having the right equipment is key to your enjoyment, success and safety.
