Caring for your Skis

Ski equipment can really add up in costs and can become quite expensive over time. By systematically maintaining your ski gear, you can actually save a lot of money in the long run. Your skis will be kept durable over time, providing you with a much better conduct on the slopes. You have two choices: You can either get them waxed and tuned in a sporting pro shop, or you can learn how to do it yourself at home. It is not a problematic process, so rather than dropping the dough to get them professionally tuned you may decide instead to buy the tools to get the job done yourself at home.

You are only going to need proper machinery for one process, which is to stone grind the base. It is recommended that this process be done at least a couple of times throughout the season. The best way to get this done is to drop your skis off with a professional shop that has a stone grinder since acquiring your own stone grinder is a bit of a process and takes learning before you will be able to efficiently grind your skis. The base of your skis can become buffed over time, and the edges become burred, which can have an adverse effect in your ski performance which is why you need to maintain them often.

If you want to keep your skis in good shape all throughout the season, then you should administer some basic ski care every five to ten days. After you wax your skis you should sharpen the edges. You should also look over the bindings to make sure that they are still properly adjusted.

Waxes for skis are made based on their most suitable temperature conditions. There are two ways to apply wax to your skis, by rubbing or by melting. Rubbed wax has a much higher chance of wearing off more quickly, and hot wax is definitely a much more durable option. You can use a clothes iron or a special waxing iron to apply the hot wax to your skis. Let the wax drip down along the base of the ski and then smooth it down using the iron. After the wax completely solidifies, the next step is to polish it using a basic rubbing pad.

Your skis have steel edges on their sides for turning and stopping power. You need to sharpen these because they can become nicked if they hit terrain or if one ski hits the other. You need to sharpen your skis regularly, which is a process that requires a significant amount of skill but can still be done in your own home. Just make a point not to remove too much metal otherwise you may undo the skis' capability to help you stop and turn as you are meant to on the slopes.

The more work you put into maintaining your skis, the more likely your skis will be to last and last for many years. If you want your skills to give excellent performance all season long, proper maintenance is absolutely key.
