Sundance Ski Resort is located in: Provo, UT
Phone: (801) 225-4107
Website: http://www.sundanceresort.com/index.html
About the Resort:
This is a very well rounded resort that has become incredibly famous over the years. Although it is on the smaller side, there are plenty of different options for winter sports here. With 42 alpine trails, 10 kilometers set aside for snowshoeing and a special area for cross country skiing, this is the perfect place to indulge your love of skiing. The location near the town of Sundance also means you'll have access to plenty of other activities, and the restaurants and hotels in this area are definitely some of the best in Utah.
What You Need to Know:
The season opens a little late, during the first week in December and runs through early April. It's a little limited compared to other resorts in the area, but the quality of the runs and the low prices more than makes up for it. This is a resort dedicated mostly to skiing, so you won't find a lot of snowboarding opportunities here. There are a few however, and classes are available.
There are 3 lifts here and they move around 5000 people an hour. There may be a short wait, especially on weekends, but overall we found that they move along pretty quickly. They've made excellent use of the space that they have and even though it is a small resort, overcrowding really isn't a problem.
Please note that if you do plan on snowboarding here, leashes are required.
Tips for Beginners:
Sundance has some of the best instructors in the world and if you're serious about learning how to ski, this is definitely the place to start. You'll be working with Olympic level skiers and coaches and numerous different types of classes are available. One on one instruction is offered at reasonable prices and group lessons are also available.
Beginners will want to stay away from the Orange Bowl, but there are plenty of trails that are made for novices. 20% of the trails are meant for beginners, and they are very gentle. There is an outfitter on site to help you get all of your gear together and we found the prices to be very competitive. Early bird lessons are among the best to take here, especially if you want to save money and like a little more solitude. Overall, we found this to be a great place to learn, especially for kids and the frequent patrols on the trails make this a very safe place to ski and learn.

Heavenly Mountain Resort is located in: Stateline, CA
Phone: (775) 586-7000

Website: http://www.skiheavenly.com/
About the Resort:
This is one of the most popular resorts in Lake Tahoe and all of California. The resort just spent half a billion dollars in renovations and if you have never been here before, or you went a few years ago, this is definitely the time to come see it. The views are simply astounding and the runs are some of the best in the United States. There is a reason that so many people return here year after year, and chances are, after one trip, you'll feel the same way. We will definitely be going back to Heavenly soon.
What You Need to Know:
The sprawling resort stretches out over nearly 5000 acres, and there is more than enough room to have fun. They have the longest vertical drop in California, at more than 3500 feet, and the mountain is Lake Tahoe's highest. There are 95 trails, and 30 different lifts. If you're in a hurry, check out their high speed lifts that really get the job done. You won't have to wait long, even on busy days, and the management keeps everything moving very smoothly.
Heavenly Mountain opens up in Mid-November and you can ski through Mid-April. They definitely have some great trails here and the management does a stellar job of keeping everything well groomed. Even though there is usually plenty of snow, the resort does make their own to supplement it, particularly in bad seasons.
Tips for Beginners:
Definitely avoid Mott Canyons and Killebrew - these are two killer trails that are only suited for pros. Approximately 20% of the 95 trails are suitable for beginners and the lessons here are some of the best in the state. There is plenty of opportunity to learn how to snowboard or ski, and we found the lesson rates to be very reasonable.
The trainers are very patient and there are also special rates for beginners that should definitely be taken advantage of. Even though only a small part of their trails are devoted to beginners, they do go all out to make you feel at home.

If you are new to the idea of skiing, but planning to visit a resort and want to hit the slopes for the first time, it is important that you take the time to consider ski or snowboarding instruction. Most large scale skiing resorts offer some form of instruction, which is available either in private one-on-one lessons, family lessons or larger group lessons. Choosing the right type of lessons is important if you want to be successful at learning how to ski. Obviously, depending on how long you plan to be in town, the speed of your learning is going to be important. You do not want to spend the entire visit in lessons only to run out of time before you can implement everything you learned on a beginner slope. Here are some of your instruction opportunities.
Private Lessons -
If you have absolutely no skiing experience, and you want to learn relatively quickly, then private one-on-one lessons are usually a good idea. These entail a learning experience where it is only you and the instructor. If you have a lot of questions or need special care or treatment, then choose a private lesson where the instructor can focus all of his attention on you. The primary advantages to private lessons are the ability to ask more questions and get more attention, and the ability to hit the slopes more quickly since your instructor will be there to keep an eye on you.
Family Lessons -
Family lessons have a somewhat different format to them, because you will be working with a private instructor, but your entire family will be there so it is not quite a one on one experience. If you and your spouse have some working understanding of skiing and you want to impart that onto your children, this is an excellent style of skiing lessons. If everyone is new to the concept of skiing it may not be ideal for the entire family to learn all at once unless you consider a group experience instead where everyone is a beginner.
Group Lessons -
Group lessons are popular, and therefore are offered by most skiing and snowboarding resorts. The purpose behind group lessons is to act as a class, where everyone is brand new to the concept of skiing, and all of the basics can be learned as a group with a single instructor calling the shots. The format here is obviously different because you are sharing the time with other people and will not be able to ask as many questions, but it is an excellent place to learn if you only want to get the basics down and have time to hit the slopes later when you are feeling more comfortable.
You will learn a lot about skiing no matter which style of lessons you choose, so choose the one that you feel most comfortable with and enjoy the powder!

December 23rd, 2008 — Skiing, Snow, Snowboarding, Tips and Tricks
If you want to spend the winter season skiing, practicing some tips and tricks for safe snow sports is a good idea. Good preparation, afterall, tends to pay dividends. If you are interested in skiing or snowboarding then it is absolutely vital that you learn some basic tips for safety before you ever hit the slopes or the hills. Just like with any other physical activity, skiing can make you susceptible to injury. The good news, however, is that by taking the right precautions and wearing the right protective gear, you can significantly reduce the risk of injury, making sure instead that you enjoy a pleasurable day on the slopes.
Techniques for Injury Prevention
Many skiing and snowboarding injuries commonly occur in the body's upper extremities or in the feet and ankles. Sprains are one of the most common types of injuries, followed closely by contusions and fractures. Because skiers and snowboarders tend to fall forwards or backwards, upper body injuries are also largely common. Rather than throwing your arms outward to catch yourself as many skiers and snowboarders are unfortunately prone to do, you should try to keep your arms tucked in, trying to roll into the fall instead. If you throw your arms outward when you fall, you can fracture your wrists, elbows or shoulders quite easily. By tucking and rolling, you will distribute the impact of the fall over a larger portion of the body. The fall will likely still hurt, but the impact will not be hard enough on any one part of your body to cause a serious injury.
Lower Body Injuries
When lower body injuries do occur, it is primarily because the skier's or snowboarder's feet are strapped into skis or a snowboard, localizing knee movement. If you do a lot of aerial style movements, then the chance of incurring abdominal, spine, chest or head injuries is greatly increased. You should be aware of the fact that ankle injuries are also quite common. It is also possible that if you lose control of your board or skis at a high speed that you may incur a head or spinal injury.
See a Doctor Immediately
If you do obtain any injuries while skiing or snowboard it may be difficult for you to figure out what extent of injuries exist. Any time there is swelling or puffiness where the injury is, this may indicate that the injury is serious and needs to be addressed by a trained physician. Always make sure that you visit a physician as soon as possible to rule out breaks, fractures, serious sprains or other serious injuries. Obtaining a correct diagnosis is vital if you want the injury to properly heal rather than being exacerbated on the slopes.
Protect Yourself
You can protect yourself by insuring that your body is in good condition and covered in the proper gear. Follow a fitness routine prior to hitting the slopes to make sure that you are strong and in good shape, and make sure to buy high quality protective gear any time you intend to go skiing or snowboarding if you want to cushion some of the impact during a fall. Snowboarding and skiing may be risky sports, but you can protect yourself with a little bit of know how.

About the Resort -
If you are looking to enjoy a resort that personifies the best qualities of beautiful Southwestern Colorado in the wintertime, then the Hesperus Ski Area is where its at. Offering skiing by day and beneath the stars from the top of an 8,800 foot mountain, the lighted Hesperus ski area is waiting for you.
What You Need to Know -
Nighttime skiing season begins in January most years, and nighttime skiing runs between 4 o'clock pm and 9 o'clock pm. In 2008, night skiing began on January 7th. Regular season hours are Saturday from 9 o'clock am until 9 o'clock pm, and Sunday 9 o'clock am until 4 o'clock pm. There is a nice selection of terrain, with evenly split up sections that are comprised of 20 percent green, 20 percent blue, 30 percent black and 30 percent double black diamond which means there is a nice range of challenges no matter what your experience level is on the slopes. Ski Hesperus gets around 65" of snowfall per year, and has about 60 acres of terrain to ski or snowboard on. The season begins around mid December and ends in the beginning of March. If weather permits and there is still snowfall, the season may be extended but this is not normally likely.
Tips for Beginners:
If you are a beginner to skiing and are just hitting the slopes for the first or second time, it would be fruitful to take advantage of the First Time Skier Package. This package offers ski rentals, lessons and a lift ticket. The price is $55 dollars for an adult and $48 dollars for junior skiers. This cost is not much more than a traditional lift ticket, however it also affords you the rental gear that you need, along with a basic instructional lesson. Combining simply the cost of the lift ticket and rentals would cost more than this, so it is definitely worthwhile if you are looking to brush up on your skills on the slopes.
Fees -
There are no half day passes offered here, so there are only full day lift tickets available. On weekdays, the only lift ticket available is a standard adult ticket which costs $32.00. On weekends and holidays, adult tickets for full days cost $32.00 and junior tickets are $21.00. Lift tickets for night time skiing are different, and go for $25.00 per adult ticket and $15.00 per junior ticket. You can also get a night time pass at the National Ski Patrol Swap in November, which runs for $149.00 and allows you to ski during night time hours throughout the season. If you need rental gear, you can find what you need for $12.00 or $10.00 for adults and juniors respectively to rent a ski package, or $20.00 across the board to rent a snowboarding gear package no matter your age.
