When you think about skiing, the last place you would think about would be Australia. Those who do look into this incredible country for skiing are in for a surprise, as Australia features plenty of amazing ski resorts. If you are looking for alpine skiing you are going to find a wealth of resorts that feature both technical merit and immense beauty.

There are plenty of different resorts for you to choose from if you plan on Alpine skiing in Australia. These are just a few of the best resorts in the country for downhill skiing.

Mount Hotham

Mount Hotham is quickly recognized as one of the most beautiful downhill ski locations in the country, located in the Australian Alps in Victoria, Australia. It is one of the highest ski locations in the country.

People flock to this particular location because of the amount of snow that is seen here each and every year. The Mount Hotham Ski Resort makes the best use of it, featuring a wide range of runs for both skiers and snowboarders. This location is tailored more toward serious skiers and snowboarders, with 40 percent of the runs dedicated to advanced riders. 40 percent is dedicated to intermediate skiers as well, with the final 20 percent going to beginners.

This resort is fairly large, with over 12 different lifts taking both adults and children around the resort. With over 245 ha. of skiable terrain and 72 different runs, you will be sure to find a run that you love at the resort.

Mount Buller Ski Resort

Also located in Victoria is the Mount Buller Ski Resort, a large resort with a smaller amount of runs. The location features over 300 ha. of skiable land, but only has 25 different runs around the resort. There are plenty of groomed trails for you to enjoy, even if you are a beginner. Around 25 percent of the terrain found at Mount Buller is for beginner skiers. 45 percent of the terrain is meant for intermediate skiers, with the final 30 percent going to those who would consider themselves to be advanced skiers.

This is a great location for anyone who is looking for long runs that cover an impressive amount of beautiful natural land. The resort features 25 different lifts, making it simple for skiers and snowboarders to get around the large resort.

Thredbo Village

Thredbo Village, located in the Australian Alps in New South Wales, is a popular resort that features a large skiable area and a wide variety of runs. Thredbo featured nearly 500 ha. of skiable area with over 50 runs covering that expanse. The 14 different lifts at this Alpine skiing location take riders across the mountain and village. The longest run in this location is almost 6 km long, and is found from Karel’s T-Bar to Friday Flat.

Be prepared for some crowds if you decide to check out this Australian Alpine Skiing location, as the mountain sees over 700,000 people during the winter months. It is popular because it features Australia’s longest ski runs.

The location is friendly to those who are looking to do a little more than simple alpine skiing. The park features five different terrain parks, including the basic ‘Wombat World’ and the incredibly advanced ‘Advanced Park’.

Perisher

Perisher is located near Canberra, and is the largest ski resort in all of Australia. The large ski resort is actually a mix of multiple villages; this is the resort being talked about if you hear of Guthega, Blue Cow, Perisher Valley, or Smiggin Holes.

To say that this Alpine skiing location is popular because of it’s size is a grand understatement. The resort features over 1,244 ha. of skiable land. The resort needs nearly 50 different lifts to get individuals around the four different villages that compose the resort.

Perisher features seven different mountain peaks, with the tallest being Mount Perisher. The runs that are featured on these peaks are geared toward intermediate skiers and snowboarders. Around 60 percent of the ski resort’s runs are for intermediate riders. Beginners will find that 22 percent of the runs are geared toward their experience level, with the final 18 percent given to advanced riders.

Perisher is not known for distance alpine skiing, as the longest run is smaller than 3 km. The location does feature more than simple skiing, however, with one super pipe, five terrain parks, and one rider X course available to guests.

Charlotte Pass Alpine Resort

The Charlotte Pass Alpine Resort is the official resort for Charlotte Pass, located in the Snowy Mountain in New South Wales. It is a small resort that only features 50 ha. of skiable land. With five different lifts, the resort caters to those who are looking for a skiing escape without the big resort feel.

Charlotte Pass Alpine Resort is recognized as the oldest ski resort in the country. It is also recognized as the highest location for skiing in Australia.

Ben Lomond

Those who are looking for a ski resort in Tasmania generally turn to Ben Lomond, as it is what many consider to be the only true ski location in the area. Ben Lomond does not see a rush of skiers, which makes this a good location for those looking to go off of the beaten path. The ski resort is small, with only 8 lifts needed to take individuals around the mountain.

It is possible for you to find incredible Alpine skiing resorts in Australia. There are plenty of large ski locations that feature incredible runs and beautiful terrain. There are also small locations, like Ben Lomond and Charlotte Pass, that give you the skiing and snowboarding that you need without the hustle and bustle of large crowds and large resorts. Take the time to look into all of these locations and find the Australia Alpine Skiing location that is perfect for your skiing needs. Contrary to popular belief, you will be able to find an amazing ski resort in Australia.

There are many different kinds of skis and skiing that are available on the market today. Every type of skis actually has its very own unique set of applications and features. It is vitally important that you become familiar with all the different types of skis that are available for you to choose from so that you can make sure that you make the right choice. The right skis are skis that are suitable for the type of skiing that you want to do and the type of skier that you are. If you make the wrong decision, the results could be disastrous, or at the very least embarrassing.

Alpine Skis and Alpine Skiing

These skis are designed to be fast, precise and excellent for when you are dealing with Pistes that are hard groomed. They are primarily designed to be good at easy turning. They have ski bindings that fasten securely to the foot at both the toe and the heel. They also feature a mechanism that is designed so that it detaches the foot from the ski in case a certain amount of force is applied.

Freeride Skis and Freeride Skiing

These are the skis that you are probably going to be looking for when you have mastered absolutely everything that your local ski area had to give you. These freeride skis are absolutely excellent when you are dealing with tricky or tough conditions. These skis are capable of floating through powder snow while cutting through any crud snow, and they can even slice right through any slush snow that you encounter. This is a ski that is intended for an advanced or expert skier with racing on their mind.

Telemark Skis and Telemark Skiing

These are downhill skis or touring skis. They have a binding that only actually attaches the boot to the ski at the toe. This is a ski that was pioneered in Telemark in Norway, and it happens to be the first ever ski that has a notable waist, meaning that turning has become much easier when you use these skis.

Cross Country Skis and Cross Country Skiing

These skis tend to be quite thin and quite slight, and they have ski edges that tend to be slightly straight. Just like with telemark ski varieties, the binding here is only attached at the toe. This type of ski is typically coated using wax to decrease the level of friction that is experienced during the forward motion. Some of the models of these skis have patterns on their bottoms which increases friction when a backward motion is attempted.

Freestyle Skis and Freestyle Skiing

These are skis that are specifically meant to be used during freestyle skiing. Each discipline is going to require its own unique type of ski. Make sure that you are choosing the right type of ski for your unique needs. If you choose an improper ski, you could end up getting hurt as a result.
