Interesting and Inspirational Quotes -

"It's disgusting. I've never eaten such bad food in my life. It's unfortunate because Italy is known for its good food and I've had good Italian food, but I guess they just don't know how to cook for a lot of people." - Resi Stiegler

"I think it's pretty pathetic that no one showed up, and that Italy couldn't really put on an event that like maybe Salt Lake City did. But that's not why we are here to race." - Resi Stiegler

"Lindsey's Gumby, so she should be good. Gumby, that's anyone that can do the stuff she does and not get hurt." - Resi Stiegler

Sundance Ski Resort, Provo, UT

Sundance Ski Resort is located in: Provo, UT

Phone: (801) 225-4107

Website: http://www.sundanceresort.com/index.html

About the Resort:

This is a very well rounded resort that has become incredibly famous over the years. Although it is on the smaller side, there are plenty of different options for winter sports here. With 42 alpine trails, 10 kilometers set aside for snowshoeing and a special area for cross country skiing, this is the perfect place to indulge your love of skiing. The location near the town of Sundance also means you'll have access to plenty of other activities, and the restaurants and hotels in this area are definitely some of the best in Utah.

What You Need to Know:

The season opens a little late, during the first week in December and runs through early April. It's a little limited compared to other resorts in the area, but the quality of the runs and the low prices more than makes up for it. This is a resort dedicated mostly to skiing, so you won't find a lot of snowboarding opportunities here. There are a few however, and classes are available.

There are 3 lifts here and they move around 5000 people an hour. There may be a short wait, especially on weekends, but overall we found that they move along pretty quickly. They've made excellent use of the space that they have and even though it is a small resort, overcrowding really isn't a problem.

Please note that if you do plan on snowboarding here, leashes are required.

Tips for Beginners:

Sundance has some of the best instructors in the world and if you're serious about learning how to ski, this is definitely the place to start. You'll be working with Olympic level skiers and coaches and numerous different types of classes are available. One on one instruction is offered at reasonable prices and group lessons are also available.

Beginners will want to stay away from the Orange Bowl, but there are plenty of trails that are made for novices. 20% of the trails are meant for beginners, and they are very gentle. There is an outfitter on site to help you get all of your gear together and we found the prices to be very competitive. Early bird lessons are among the best to take here, especially if you want to save money and like a little more solitude. Overall, we found this to be a great place to learn, especially for kids and the frequent patrols on the trails make this a very safe place to ski and learn.

Heavenly Mountain Resort, Stateline, CA

Website: http://www.skiheavenly.com/

About the Resort:

This is one of the most popular resorts in Lake Tahoe and all of California. The resort just spent half a billion dollars in renovations and if you have never been here before, or you went a few years ago, this is definitely the time to come see it. The views are simply astounding and the runs are some of the best in the United States. There is a reason that so many people return here year after year, and chances are, after one trip, you'll feel the same way. We will definitely be going back to Heavenly soon.

What You Need to Know:

The sprawling resort stretches out over nearly 5000 acres, and there is more than enough room to have fun. They have the longest vertical drop in California, at more than 3500 feet, and the mountain is Lake Tahoe's highest. There are 95 trails, and 30 different lifts. If you're in a hurry, check out their high speed lifts that really get the job done. You won't have to wait long, even on busy days, and the management keeps everything moving very smoothly.

Heavenly Mountain opens up in Mid-November and you can ski through Mid-April. They definitely have some great trails here and the management does a stellar job of keeping everything well groomed. Even though there is usually plenty of snow, the resort does make their own to supplement it, particularly in bad seasons.

Tips for Beginners:

Definitely avoid Mott Canyons and Killebrew - these are two killer trails that are only suited for pros. Approximately 20% of the 95 trails are suitable for beginners and the lessons here are some of the best in the state. There is plenty of opportunity to learn how to snowboard or ski, and we found the lesson rates to be very reasonable.

The trainers are very patient and there are also special rates for beginners that should definitely be taken advantage of. Even though only a small part of their trails are devoted to beginners, they do go all out to make you feel at home.

Website: http://www.dodgeridge.com/

About the Resort:

Dodge Ridge Ski Resort first opened its doors in 1951 and became an instant favorite with locals and with travelers. This nice resort goes all out to make you feel at home and there are plenty of activities there to keep the whole family busy. With numerous trails, five different terrain parks and plenty of snow, this is one resort that ranks very highly when it comes to quality skiing and snowboarding.

There are eight lifts that serve the trails, with three additional surface lifts. All told, there are currently 59 runs in operation and there is little danger of overcrowding, thanks to the sprawling trails and great set-up.

What You Need to Know:

Dodge Ridge is open from December through April, and their lift tickets are quite reasonable. The hours of operation are from 9am to 4pm throughout the season, and special discounts are frequently made available. The lodge is very well appointed and we found that the trails were all well maintained and closely patrolled. This is a very safe place to ski, and it offers enough variety to stay challenging, even for the best skiers.

Tips for Beginners:

Out of the 59 runs, only 20% are suitable for beginners. The terrain parks are a great place to start and there are plenty of lessons scheduled throughout the day with the on-staff pros. The resort is also very good with teaching children and there are special rental packages that include all the gear you need, as well as your lift tickets and instruction fees.

Since the trails are so well patrolled, this is a very beginner friendly resort, even though the majority of the runs are dedicated to intermediate and expert skiers. There are plenty of spots to learn cross country skiing as well as snowboarding, and this is a great place to get your feet wet so-to-speak, if you are completely new to skiing.

Park City Mountain Resort is considered by many to be one of the finest ski resorts in the world. With a great location, some recent renovations and a commitment to sustaining the environment, it’s easy to see why they are so popular. This is a huge resort that has been in operation for more than 40 years and during that time, they have built up some serious return business.

What You Need to Know:

You’ll have access to more than 3300 acres of skiing fun during your stay here. There are 16 lifts serving the more than 100 trails throughout the park. There are some serious runs here, with the longest being 18,000 feet. However, they have a great mix of beginner runs as well as expert runs. This is a family friendly resort, and there are plenty of different activities to enjoy while you are here.

The season starts here in mid-November and runs through mid-April. There are some great resources for snowboarders here and the terrain parks have really been built with them in mind.

Tips for Beginners:

Park City Mountain Resort is known for the educational programs, and there is no better place to learn how to ski. Their children’s lessons are renowned and they also offer some great options for adults as well. Even though just 17% of the trails are for beginners, there are plenty of places to learn how to ski and then test out your skills.

The classes here are kept small to ensure that everyone has a chance to learn at their own pace, and most will break for a lunch, and that is even included in the price of the lesson. For the money, this is the single best place to learn how to ski in the area.

About the Resort -

What may be the largest factor making the Suicide Six Resort in Woodstock, Vermont as unique as it is, is when skiing history was made in 1934, when local residents rigged up a Model T Ford engine to power the first ever ski tow. Two years later, Suicide Six was opened by Bunny Bertram. This was originally a commercial ski area with a few trails, but it has grown to include 23 different trails, transporting skiers through two different chair lifts and a J bar. The opening for Suicide Six occurs in Mid December, and skiing and riding are augmented by Mother Nature for the following few months, along with snow guns and the help of superior levels of grooming.

What You Need to Know -

Peak tickets average at $55, and the elevation of the peak is an enjoyable 1,200 feet. The Woodstock Inn offers free ski and lift tickets to its residents. The inn offers additional recreation opportunities in addition to traditional skiing and Nordic skiing, including spa services, a fitness center and golf as well. The season begins near mid December and runs until the end of March most years, weather permitting. The terrain at Suicide Six is broken up pretty fairly, with 30 percent green, 35 percent blue, 30 percent black and 5 percent black double diamond. There are 23 different trails, and the toughest trail is the Back Scratcher. There are two different lifts and a terrain park as well. The summit is 1,200 Ft / 366 M and the base is 550 Ft / 168 M with a vertical of 650 Ft / 198 M. The Suicide Six in conjunction with Woodstock inn comprise a total of 100 acres, and see approximately 90 inches of annual snow, with 50% of snow being artificially produced.

Rental gear is available to beginners on the slopes for $32 dollars for both ski packages and snowboard packages, which provide all the gear you need to hit the slopes for the first time. The Suicide Six at the Woodstock Inn also offers lessons and instructions for beginners. Group lessons are $32 dollars per person. Private lessons are $65 dollars per person, and semi private lessons are $50 per lesson. Snowboarding lessons cost $65 per person. Skier Profile for Morgan Smyth

Morgan Smyth was born in Northampton, MA on February 10, 1986. She started skiing at the age of 2, but was not entirely convinced she liked cross country skiing at first. Once she got into it, she became somewhat of a tiger, placing in numerous Junior World Championships. Now that she is moving through college, she has plans to work her way to the World Cup. She began her skiing racing career at the young age of nine, and gained an entirely new perspective on cross country skiing at this time. She may not have liked skiing in the past, but this is when it became a real passion for her, especially after working herself through numerous club and regional races, scoring herself a place at Styn, Norway's 2004 Junior Worlds. Her new head development coach, Matt Whitcomb was actually a member of the Bill Koch league at the same time, though only for a year. His final year in the league coincided with Smyth's first year. They had already built up some memories and some skiing history together before he was named as her head coach of development, in other words. A month after she returned from Junior Worlds she managed to earn three medals at the 2004 Junior Olympics, two bronzes and a gold medal.

Where She Is Now -

2008 was originally supposed to be a year made of recuperation and rest for Morgan Smyth, but she could not prevent herself from hitting the snow and ended up pulling fifth place at NCAA and a 10th place at the Canadian nationals. She has fully recovered from her training and seems to be progressive phenomenally. According to her head development coach, Matt Whitcomb, she is definitely going to be a factor at the U23 World Championships which are set to be held in France, and she will also definitely be shining at the World Cup starts which are being held in Whistler, where she will more than likely see her first World Cup.

Career Highlights -

Morgan Smyth has been skiing since the age of 2, but has a limited professional record. In 2006 she placed 7th in the FR sprint in the Junior Worlds. Following the Junior Words she took 3 different medals in the 2006 Junior Olympics, including a gold and two bronze metals. She is also a three time junior worlds racer at this point.
