Website: http://www.bearvalley.com/winter/index.asp

About the Resort:

This is a great, all inclusive ski resort located in the heart of the Sierra's. They have a fantastic reputation as being a great place to bring the family, even if not everyone likes to ski. There are more than enough activities to keep everyone busy, and there are a variety of on-mountain activities to tackle, such as snowboarding, tubing, cross country skiing and downhill skiing. The resort offers special packages that are designed with guests in mind and we found that the staff was incredibly helpful throughout our stay. Definitely one of the nicest resorts in the area.

What You Need to Know:

Bear Valley Mountain is open from mid-November through mid-April. They are typically open from 9am to 4pm, but there are days when they may have to close early due to weather. This area gets quite a bit of snow each year, but in case there is a bad season, they also make snow on site to keep the trails running at top condition.

There are plenty of places to eat and shop while you're here and this is a great resort if you are planning a weekend getaway or a longer vacation. Anything you could ever need is right here under one roof, and it's truly hard to leave once your vacation is over. The resort has a high rate of return customers and it's easy to see why after one stay.

Tips for Beginners:

25% of the mountain's trails are suitable for beginners, and the cross country areas and terrain park are also ideal. They now offer trail maps that can be loaded onto your GPS system and we highly recommend taking advantage of this feature if you are a beginner. Patrols are frequent and this is a very safe place to ski, regardless of your skill level.

There are some great instructors here that are very well versed in coaching beginners and the resort also offers special inclusive packages for new skiers that include not only lessons, but all the rental equipment you'll need. We recommend this resort to beginning skiers wholeheartedly.

New at Bear Valley

New Family Lesson Center — Providing families with a quick and easy one-stop location for lessons, rental equipment, lift passes, and age-appropriate ski and snow-play programs for the “young cubs.”

Snow-Play Program — Providing fun activities and introduction to snow sports for kids ages 3 to 6; half-day and all-day options available.

The new “BEAR-TRACKER” expedition vehicle — On powder days it will carry advanced skiers and riders to untouched backcountry terrain.

Increased Snow-Making Fleet — State-of-the-art snow guns now cover in excess of 100 acres to ensure early season access.

Remodeled Childcare Area — An attractive center for parents and childcare providers that offers a comfortable place to entertain and take care of the kids (infants to 2-year-olds) while older skiers and riders enjoy the slopes.

Mountain/Meadow Combo Season Pass — This pass gives you access to downhill or cross-country skiing, any day of the season!

About the Resort:

This great resort is tucked away into the Sierra National Forest. Extremely friendly towards beginners, but also well suited to professionals, this is one of the nicest ski resorts we’ve ever come across in this area. The atmosphere is very friendly and the management goes above and beyond to make sure you’re happy. The fees are also incredibly low considering the quality of the runs. It’s easy to see why so many people return here year after year.

What You Need to Know:

There are a total of 45 trails, and 11 lifts, which move quite a few people an hour. There is also a great ski lift that is more like a carpet that is ideal for children or those just learning to ski. These lifts can be found near the beginner areas, which we’ll go more into detail about below.

The onsite lodging is very reasonably priced and we highly recommend staying on site, especially if you plan on doing a lot of skiing. Many people actually end up renting a vacation home here, due to the high quality of this resort and it’s prime location in the heart of central California.

Tips for Beginners:

There is an entire area that is dedicated to beginners and we found it to be on the most beginner friendly resorts in the state. Although only 11% of the trails are intended for beginners, there are many places to learn how to ski and then safely test your skills. The ski carpet is a lot of fun in its own right, and everything is made very simple.

We found the instructors to be very knowledgeable and this is a great place to send kids for ski school, considering that the resort offers very low prices for students, and some great instructional programs. Adults will have plenty of chances to learn as well and lessons are offered throughout the day.

Fees:

About the Resort:

This is a well kept secret in the Cedarville area, and one of the nicest resorts we've been to in some time. The park is actually community owned and staffed entirely by volunteers. They strive to bring a small town atmosphere to the park and succeed nicely. You'll be among friends here and this is a great place to take the family. Although it may not be the glitziest resort in the world, or the most popular, it is one resort that should be visited at least once, particularly if you do plan to be in this area.

What You Need to Know:

This resort is snowboard friendly and there are many different activities available to keep the whole family entertained. The prices are incredibly low given the level of service and despite the fact that it is entirely staffed by volunteers, the trails are very well groomed and maintained.

It is however only open on weekends and holidays during the winter months and the hours of operation are 10am to 4pm. The lift is a t-bar style and although it doesn't move thousands of people an hour there is little chance of having to wait in line here.

Tips for Beginners:

This is one of the most beginner friendly places to ski. The trails are gentle, the safety patrols are diligent and lessons are offered throughout the day. There are a total of six runs here and most are suitable for beginning skiers. The lower portion of The Road trail is ideal for beginners, and can be accessed via a rope tow lift.

There is also a great powder bowl that is a lot of fun and should be visited at least once while you're here. There is an area for Nordic skiers and you may even be able to get a lesson on this form of skiing if you happen to get a day where a pro is volunteering.

Website: http://www.snow-valley.com/index_english.html

About the Resort:

Snow Valley Ski Area is a great place for beginning skiers and there are few resorts that really cater to this market as well as they have. If you are considering vacationing near Running Springs, this is definitely the resort to stop in. The management is terrific and the accommodations are truly top notch. Many people consider this resort to be the premier place to learn how to ski. There are also plenty of opportunities for more advanced skiers to have fun and 70% of the trails here are intended for intermediate or advanced skiers. The resort has done a great job of balancing everything out.

What You Need to Know:

The season here is pretty short, running from November through March. It is located in Southern California, so snow making is necessary. However, they do a great job of keeping the trails well maintained and we found everything to be well groomed. The entire resort takes up around 240 acres and there is a very long vertical for those that are a little more well versed in skiing.

There are eleven lifts that move well over 10,000 people every hour, and we didn't find that there was a long wait, even during the peaks season. The usual hours of operation are from 8:30am to 4pm, but they open a half hour earlier on Saturdays and Sundays.

Tips for Beginners:

As we mentioned previously, this is a beginner paradise. About 30% of the trails here are suitable for beginners and there is an entire learning center that was built to offer quality instruction. The terrain park is also a great place to get in some practice and lessons are held throughout the day. They are very good with teaching children to ski and the adult classes are also very beneficial.

The resort offers a special package for beginners that includes everything you'll need to learn, with your lift ticket, cost for the lessons and gear included. We found the lesson prices to be quite low, especially considering the quality of the instruction. All of the trails here are patrolled consistently and it's a very safe place to ski.

The first male Olympic competitor on snowboard in Britain, Dan Wakeham has announced that he will be retiring from the world cup circuit. He has recently announced that following seven years with the British snowboarding team, he will be retiring from World Cup level competition. Dan Wakeham is only 27 years old, and was regularly regarded as being a potential hopeful for next year's Winter Olympic medal. The games are slated to be held in Vancouver.

Dan Wakeham said that the decision that he made to retire was one that he had been considering for a great deal of time. Ultimately, he said, what it came down to was a loss of motivation for the sport, a lack of funding and lack of interest in the top levels of competition, which definitely meant that the Olympics were out. After putting a lot of serious thought into the situation, Dan Wakeham ultimately decided that he did not want to pursue World Cup level snowboarding any longer. He specifically mentioned that he always felt motivated to quit at the end of each season, but that he stayed because of promises of sponsorship and funding.

The fact was, according to Dan Wake, that he simply had not been happy for a while, and that he no longer felt enjoyment when he competed. His attitude toward World Cup level snowboarding had become increasingly slack with each new season, partially because there was a lack of funding, but also for other reasons as well. Dan Wakeham admitted that he did not want to try to qualify for the Winter Olympic Games half-heartedly and that he simply is not motivated enough to give the sport his all.

In his entire seven years on the British professional snowboarding team, Dan Wakeham achieved a highest world ranking at 28th. Within his first two years of competition, he took Europa Cup Championship and he took fifth in the World Cup's 2006 Halfpipe Tour. He also recorded two different top ten and eight different top twenty results within World Cup finals tournaments and also made an Olympic appearance during the Turin 2006 Olympic Games.

Wakeham does insist that he will continue to represent those sponsoring him, and he says that he is still interested in working closely with the industry surrounding extreme sports. Right now, however, his priority is to find a little bit more consistency in his life.

When Dan Wakeham made his announcement regarding retirement, he confessed that his intention was not to quit snowboarding, but rather simply to step out of the serious competition arena. His sponsors are all accepting of the decision, and they do plan to continue supporting him as he represents them. Still, rather than snowboarding day in and day out, Dan Wakeham would like to focus on a normal job with a regular 9-5 kind of salary for a while.

Rim Nordic Ski Area is located in: Running Springs, CA

Website: http://www.rimnordic.com/

About the Resort:

This is actually a part of a group of resorts and they offer some great deals between them all. If you are serious about cross country skiing, this is a great place to go. It's a bit smaller than some resorts, but they have done a great job working with the space that they have. This is also one of the few places to snoeshoe and among those that enjoy this sport, this resort has become very popular. This is a family friendly area and there are plenty of activities to keep everyone busy during your stay. The restaurant has some great food and overall, we found this to be a very nice resort.

What You Need to Know:

Dogs are not allowed at this particular resort, even though a few others in the area do allow that. There are a total of 12 miles of trails and we found them to be impeccably groomed. Some of the trails are quite long and more suitable for advanced skiers, but there are plenty of shorter tracks that will serve beginners well.

It is important to bring a few supplies with you whenever you cross country ski. There are not going to be any places along the trails to fuel up, so you'll want to bring everything you need with you. Since it is a smaller resort, you'll never be that far away from the main base, but it is still a good idea to bring the things that you may need.

Tips for Beginners:

There are quite a few short trails here that are very well suited for beginners or for snowshoers. We recommend taking advantage of lessons, especially if you have never tried this type of skiing before. There are some great deals available on lessons for people of all ages, and overall, their rates are some of the lowest we have found.

There are some great kids lessons available here as well, and they do offer special deals on reduced fees for rentals if you do get lessons, so it is well worth the money to take advantage of them.

Fees:

About the Resort:

This is actually three resorts all bundled into one, offering a massive amount of space and plenty of chances for fun. This is considered to be one of the premier ski resorts in Southern California. Some of the drops here are simply jaw dropping, but there are still plenty of spots for beginners to learn some new skills. The facilities here are definitely some of the best we’ve seen and we appreciated the fact that they offer flexible pricing, by the day, run or even hour.

What You Need to Know:

The season starts here in late November and goes through April. They do manufacture snow since the area only gets about 155 inches of snow a year. However, we found that the runs were all immaculately groomed and the management takes excellent care of the facilities.

There are eighteen lifts in operation, so even though this is a popular resort, you won’t have to worry too much about waiting in line. The three resorts are spread out over 500 acres and make up three distinct mountains.

Tips for Beginners:

This is the perfect place for beginners to learn how to ski, thanks in a large part to the excellent beginner runs, which account for 22% of the total trails, as well as the low fees. You’ll be able to spend exactly what you want on your lift ticket and further discounts are available for their training lessons.

This is one of the best places in the area to learn snowboarding as well as skiing and we found that the instructors were well versed in good skiing principles and were very skilled at teaching. If you have kids that need to learn how to ski, or you want to try your hand at it, this is a great place to start.

Fees:

Junior $20 $20 $20 $20
*Note: 1/2 day starts at 12:00

You can also purchase tickets by the hour or the run to save even more money. In addition, they also offer The Point Ticket, which is sold in blocks of 200, 500 or 1,000 points. You can use these points to pay for your runs each day.

Season Passes
Regularly $599, the Mountain High Season Pass Sale lasts from September 1st to October 31st, or until all passes are sold out. The first 5,000 are $299, with the second 5,000 are $349.

About the Resort:

Even if you can't pronounce the name, this is one of the easiest resorts to recognize in the Tahoe area, thanks in a large part to their great reputation and their commitment to their visitors. In operation since 1927, this stellar resort has been the go-to destination for locals and travelers alike and there are few resorts in this area that can hold a candle to Granlibakken. The entire complex is only 74 acres, but they use every square inch and go overboard with their service to ensure that their guests are happy.

What You Need to Know:

Granlibakken is Norwegian for "sheltered by trees," and this family run resort is home to many different types of wildlife and is extremely picturesque. This resort opens a little late in the year, usually around mid-December and stays open until the first of April. There are two main lifts, and they serve around 400 people an hour. On the rare occasion that you do have to wait, it's usually not for very long.

There is one main trail at Granlibakken, but it is split into three distinct levels so that everyone can enjoy it. This is also a haven for sledders, and there is even a snowplay area where kids can build their own snowmen and have fun. The fees at this resort are some of the lowest in California, and although the resort is small, they more than make up for this fact with their service.

Tips for Beginners:

This is an incredibly friendly resort for beginners and it's one of the best places to go if you want to be able to learn with a smaller group of students. It's not overcrowded like a lot of resorts and the instructors are very good and very patient. Kids are more than welcome here and if you're not quite ready to start skiing, you can give snowshoeing a try first.

The trail here is very mild and will not be terribly difficult even for those that have never strapped on skis before. We highly recommend this resort to families and to those that are interested in getting started with skiing.

Fees:

About the Resort:

Dodge Ridge Ski Resort first opened its doors in 1951 and became an instant favorite with locals and with travelers. This nice resort goes all out to make you feel at home and there are plenty of activities there to keep the whole family busy. With numerous trails, five different terrain parks and plenty of snow, this is one resort that ranks very highly when it comes to quality skiing and snowboarding.

There are eight lifts that serve the trails, with three additional surface lifts. All told, there are currently 59 runs in operation and there is little danger of overcrowding, thanks to the sprawling trails and great set-up.

What You Need to Know:

Dodge Ridge is open from December through April, and their lift tickets are quite reasonable. The hours of operation are from 9am to 4pm throughout the season, and special discounts are frequently made available. The lodge is very well appointed and we found that the trails were all well maintained and closely patrolled. This is a very safe place to ski, and it offers enough variety to stay challenging, even for the best skiers.

Tips for Beginners:

Out of the 59 runs, only 20% are suitable for beginners. The terrain parks are a great place to start and there are plenty of lessons scheduled throughout the day with the on-staff pros. The resort is also very good with teaching children and there are special rental packages that include all the gear you need, as well as your lift tickets and instruction fees.

Since the trails are so well patrolled, this is a very beginner friendly resort, even though the majority of the runs are dedicated to intermediate and expert skiers. There are plenty of spots to learn cross country skiing as well as snowboarding, and this is a great place to get your feet wet so-to-speak, if you are completely new to skiing.

About the Resort:

This is one of the highest ranked ski resorts in the world and considered to be the ultimate destination by many travelers. Once you visit, it's easy to see why so many people return here year after year. With quality service, excellent trails and low priced lift tickets, this is one of the few resorts in the area that combines a great value with some of the best skiing in the country.

What You Need to Know:

The resort opens up during the last week in October and stays in operation until the end of April. Their daily hours are from 9am to 4pm. There are currently fourteen lifts in operation, which are capable of moving more than 17,000 people an hour so waiting in is normally not an issue here.

The entire resort stretches out over 2400 acres and there are many different activities besides skiing that the whole family can enjoy. Snowboarding is quite popular here and there are terrain parks in addition to the normal runs.

Tips for Beginners:

Avoid Hell's Delight at all costs, as the name suggests, it's only for pros. However, you'll be able to find plenty of trails here that are more than suitable for beginners. Ski lessons are held throughout the day and they are reasonably priced. We found the instructors to be top notch and very patient.

This is a very family friendly resort and there are lessons geared towards children, as well as adults. You'll also be able to take advantage of some great discounts on lessons, tickets and gear.
