Skier Profile for Morgan Smyth

Morgan Smyth was born in Northampton, MA on February 10, 1986. She started skiing at the age of 2, but was not entirely convinced she liked cross country skiing at first. Once she got into it, she became somewhat of a tiger, placing in numerous Junior World Championships. Now that she is moving through college, she has plans to work her way to the World Cup. She began her skiing racing career at the young age of nine, and gained an entirely new perspective on cross country skiing at this time. She may not have liked skiing in the past, but this is when it became a real passion for her, especially after working herself through numerous club and regional races, scoring herself a place at Styn, Norway's 2004 Junior Worlds. Her new head development coach, Matt Whitcomb was actually a member of the Bill Koch league at the same time, though only for a year. His final year in the league coincided with Smyth's first year. They had already built up some memories and some skiing history together before he was named as her head coach of development, in other words. A month after she returned from Junior Worlds she managed to earn three medals at the 2004 Junior Olympics, two bronzes and a gold medal.

Where She Is Now -

2008 was originally supposed to be a year made of recuperation and rest for Morgan Smyth, but she could not prevent herself from hitting the snow and ended up pulling fifth place at NCAA and a 10th place at the Canadian nationals. She has fully recovered from her training and seems to be progressive phenomenally. According to her head development coach, Matt Whitcomb, she is definitely going to be a factor at the U23 World Championships which are set to be held in France, and she will also definitely be shining at the World Cup starts which are being held in Whistler, where she will more than likely see her first World Cup.

Career Highlights -

Morgan Smyth has been skiing since the age of 2, but has a limited professional record. In 2006 she placed 7th in the FR sprint in the Junior Worlds. Following the Junior Words she took 3 different medals in the 2006 Junior Olympics, including a gold and two bronze metals. She is also a three time junior worlds racer at this point.

Skier Profile for Steven Nyman

Steven Nyman was born and raised in Provo, Utah. His father ran the ski school located at Sundance so he began skiing at the age of two. He launched his United States Ski Team career with two medals and took a World Cup win in 2007 to show how much he had progressed over the course of his skiing career. He was born in December 1982, so already has a lengthy career under his belt.

Nyman is one of four sons, and his parents now co-own a landscaping business since his father has retired from teaching at the Sundance ski school. When he is not skiing, he is heavy into donating time and energy for charity work, and even helped to build an orphanage to house thirty two children in Haiti.

Where He Is Now -

Steven Nyman opened the 2008 skiing season with a real bang, taking a second place medal in the Birds of Prey downhill at Beaver Creek for his third podium at the World Cup. The remainder of the season was hampered significantly by issues relating to his back, and he was left sidelined for numerous skiing events including the famed Chamonix Kandahar downhill, which was won by his teammate Marco Sullivan. It turned out he had a bulging disc, and doctors ended up putting him in a trunk cast. By May, the trunk cast had done its job and allowed Steven Nyman to return to the snow in Mammoth Mountain in California followed by a trip to Chile in South America for a pair of camps pre season.

Career Highlights -

Steven is a Former National Development Systems athlete, took 15th in the first World Cup race he ever ran in 2002, and also in 2002 was the Junior Worlds SL champ, CO silver. In 2006 he took 4th in World Cup DH (Garmisch, GER), and 19th on his 24th birthday in the Olympic DH. "He's happy. We're all happy. Medals? Screw medals. Nobody cares. A lot of people in America don't relate to this, but it's not about the medals. It's about the effort and hard work. We're all happy with what we did. Nobody is disappointed at all." - Steven Nyman

"To get the cast outfitted I basically had to be hung by my neck. The Dr. put this brace around my neck then I had to slip my arms through these sheep skin loops and he lifted me off the ground. I was suspended in the air for 15 minutes with my arms above my head and I could barely touch my toes to the ground," - Steven Nyman

Nyman is one of four sons, and his parents now co-own a landscaping business since his father has retired from teaching at the Sundance ski school. Skier Profile: Picabo Street

Picabo Street may be best known for her funny name, but she was a serious skier that not only brought home the gold on many occasions, but also had a famous ski run named after her. Not many skiers have been afforded that honor, and although she’s now retired, Picabo’s name will most likely never be forgotten.

Picabo was born in 1971 in Idaho, and her unique name was the result of her parents allowing her to name herself. Playing peek-a-boo was her favorite game as a child and that was the name she chose. Other stories attribute the name to a Native American word, Picabo, which means “shining waters.” She began skiing at an early age, and joined the US Ski Team when she was seventeen years old.

Her first Olympic medal was a silver in 1994, and Sun Valley named a run after her. She was heralded as an inspiration to young women and when she brought home the gold in 1996, she made history as the first American to win that season title. She brought home the gold again in 1998, but this would be a bad year for her. Street broke her leg and had to go through two years of rehabilitation before she could ski again.

Street was also well known for her stint as a spokeswoman for Mountain Dew, and frequently appeared on television programs, becoming very well known. She released her autobiography after her accident, and discussed the pressures that professional skiers face as well as the events leading up to her career changing accident.

In 2002 Picabo appeared in her last Olympics, and then retired from the sport as one of the top women skiers in history. In 2005, she was inducted into the National Ski Hall of Fame. She currently lives in Park City, Utah and is still active in the skiing community. She inspired countless people to take up skiing, and is partly responsible for its popularity today, thanks in a large part to her bigger than life personality and her sheer talent.

Skier Profile: Alison Forsyth

Allison Forsyth was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada on October 14th, 1978. At 29 years old, Allison is a two time Olympian medalist, a five time podium finisher in the World Cup and a bronze medal holder in the FIS World Alpine Ski Championship in Switzerland.

Her early career truly was an uphill battle. She was not born with the same raw talent in skiing as other skiers had been, and as a result, she had to completely and fully dedicate herself to being better than everyone else and everything that came with it. She would dedicate herself to being the first one on the slopes every day as well as the last one to leave the mountain every night. Giving anything less than 100 percent would be a compromise according to Forsyth. She strove to be fitter and stronger than every one else, and it led to her multiple wins.

Allison Forsyth's specialty was the grand Salome event, and she went on to being a podium placer in five World Cup, giving Canada a high placing that they haven't enjoyed since the 1970's. These victories did not come easy, as the skier faced slow startups, and later in her career she fought a debilitating condition of hip tendinitis. Despite her condition, she went on to compete in the 2006 winter Olympic games for the downhill race. She also won a bronze metal in the 2005 FIS World Alpine Ski Championship, bringing Canada back into the world scope.

Career Highlights

Her career came to a complete and sudden halt, however, in the 2006 training run at the Olympics in Turin. During the run, the Olympiad suffered a crash that gave her a debilitating knee injury. The tragic accident took her from the sport for two years, when she decided to retire from competition skiing. The tragedy was compounded by her mother's condition at the same time, suffering from breast cancer. Since then, she still continues to ski, but more for fun while she turns her dedication towards other area of her life. She is a strong proponent for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and a strong force behind Canadian alpine skiing teams.

Now, Forsyth is considering a career in communication, but she knows that she will be utilizing the leadership and skills for success that she gained from her sports career. Her skills and dedication that she developed during the start of her career, she hopes to pass on to future Canadian skiers, and apply to her own future.

Inspirational Quotes

“I took a lot of risks and made a few mistakes today but I'm really pleased with the result. I'm going to stay neutral about it because I know it's only training.”

“I'm not just going there for the sake of being there.”

“There's no doubt we can walk a little taller right now. We know that it's going to be podium or bust at the Olympics so we have top three on our mind.”

“While other people were off eating turkey I was hitting the slopes and improving my skiing. I made some major changes that have showed up right away.”

Skier Profile for Bryon Friedman

The turning point in Bryon Friedman's life was when he moved to Utah and began to take advantage of its prime skiing mountains. Bryon was only nine years old, but he quickly found the mountains of Utah to be home to him. Since then, Bryon has mixed schooling and ski training, up through college. Eventually he made it onto the United States skiing team, winning two US championships right from the start.

Bryon's skiing career has been wrought with challenges. In 2000, Bryon tore an ACL mid season, but despite this he went on to ski in 18 more races. In 2001, he tore an ACL, while in 2003; he rolled his ankle which required surgery to remove a bone spur. The biggest accident of his career was a tumble that broke his lower right leg and his hand. Over the course of two and a half years, Bryon received intensive physical therapy. Now, it is hoped that the skier will be able to start skiing again.

Where He Is Now -

In 2004, Bryon obtained the gold Olympic medal for the downhill speed. From there he went on to compete in the world cup in 2004 and 2005. However, in 2005, on the slopes at Chamonix, France, Bryon suffered an injury that caused him to miss the last two remaining months of the 2005 season, as well as the 2006 and 2007 seasons. As a result the accident, he was left with a broken hand and leg. However, this coming winter season may see his return as after two and a half years worth of physical therapy. It is according to his coaches that it is now up to him and whether or not he decides to push himself.

Career Highlights -

To date, Bryon has in his possession seven first place trophies. In 2001, Bryon began his professional career with four FIS-B wins. From that point it was two years before his next second place victory at the 2003 EC DG in Altenmarkt, AUT. In 2004, Bryon took home the 2004 US gold medal in the downhill combined event. In 2004 and 2005, Bryon had a place in the World cup, but had to leave the sport because of a serious injury to his leg. He has since recovered and is gearing up to get back out there, refusing to allow his injury to keep him out of the game.

Athlete Profile of Daron Rahlves

Daron Rahlve was born in Walnut Creek, CA in 1973 and it is simply fate that he ended up being born into an area that is synonymous with skiing. Considered by many to be the single best speed skier in the world, Rahlve is also known for his humble and quiet nature and his ability to get out there and get the job done.

He rose to prominence at the same time Bode Miller did and although Miller outshone him in many cases, it was Rahlves ability to keep bringing in medals that earned him his acclaim. Although he disappointed fans in the 2006 Olympics by failing to bring home any medals, he still has a devoted fan base. He commented on Miller’s rise to prominence stating that it didn’t really affect him that he didn’t get all of the attention and he’s just happy that skiing got a little more recognition as the result of Miller’s popularity.

Interesting and Inspiring Quotes:

“I like to stand in the back. I really don't pay attention to it too much. There's a lot said. I just try to stay out of it. I'm a skier, not a talker.”

“As far as the media stuff is concerned, he's (Miller) gotten a lot of play, a lot of (magazine) covers. That's good for our sport. To me, it's not really a big issue of me getting all the press. It's more like trying to get our sport some press, to get people to know what's coming up. ... What it comes down to, ultimately, is who's going to be skiing faster.”

“You see some of the best guys in the world crash. To me, that's what the sport is really about. You want to see guys put down some runs, like Franz Klammer back in the day.”

“That feeling is the same whether you're on either side of the hundredths. Obviously, it's great to win the world championship, but if you put down that kind of skiing, it's awesome either way.”

“But there was no question in my mind that I was gonna still go for it. I was still going for the win. I wasn't skiing for second or third place today, and in the end I think that's probably what got me there.”

“[The Olympic hype] is going to be a tough thing for me to manage. My actions are not always consistent. I'm super-mellow and laid back, but I'm always thinking and running 100,000 scenarios through my head. Sometimes I'm disciplined, but I like to be a total slacker, too. I party hard, but I train hard. People are going to try and figure me out and figure out my motivations, and it's going to be a circus.”

Controversy:

Bode ended up at the center of a firestorm of controversy during the 2006 Olympics. He admitted during an interview that he was partying pretty heavily during the events, and the American public and press quickly turned against him. Many felt that he lacked the true “spirit of the Olympics” and fans were roundly disappointed in him. He went on to a lackluster showing at the games, coming in 5th in many of his events and generally performing under expectations.

What’s He Doing Now:

Bode left the US Ski Team in 2007 and now skis independently. He has gone on to win several championships in 2007/2008, including the Audi FIS World Cup Overall and Super Combined. The 2008/2009 Season looks to be very bright for this controversial skier
