Athlete Profile: Seth Wescott

Seth Wescott is the current snowboard cross gold medalist, and now in Arosa, Switzerland, he has the fastest runs, winning the SBX World Cup and earning 1000 cup points overall. This was the first World Cup win for the Maine native, who managed to out speed Markus Schairer, David Speiser and Alex Pullin. Wescott has been snowboarding for a grand total of twenty two years and was competing for a total of eleven of them. He was the 2005 SBX world champion, and the Torino, 2006 Olympic gold medalist, the first winter games in which SBX competition earned medals.

In fifty six different attempts over a period of nine years in the LG Snowboard FIS World Cup Circuit, this was his first win. This is in the face of injury over the past 18 months, but he still managed to top a total of twenty four nations with his speedy performance in Switzerland. He was very confident in his skill, feeling confident, despite making mistakes in the past, the Rack restaurant co-owner said. The snowboarder had an additional edge over the competition which worked to bolster his confidence. He had brought over his own wax tech, Curtis Bacca, whom had worked with him in the past in the Olympics. Whenever he worked with the tech, Wescott managed to take a win, and so that provided an instant boost to his confidence throughout the duration of the competition. Bacca ending up being a last minute add on to Wescott's team, and it would seem that it paid off in the end considering the results of the race.

In the World Cup men's rankings, after the first two ski events, the current leader is Stian Sivertzen who hails from Norway with a grand total of 1200 points. Wescott now places with 1,130 points, and Baumgartner places in fourth with 950 and Watanabe places with 580 points. In the Switzerland competition, Sivertzen placed sixth amongst the other competitors, though likely could have performed better.

Wescott was born in 1976. He began skiing at the age of eight, and made the step to snowboarding at ten. The Winter X Games XI brought Wescott a Bronze medal, and in 1997 he began to train in snowboard Cross, which eventually led to his earning a gold medal in the 2006 Winter Games in Turin, Italy. Over all, he won a total of 3 silver medals and 4 bronze models in the Winter X Games. The snowboarder has the most snowboard cross starts and metals, though has not won the gold in the Winter X Games. That said, Seth Wescott is constantly appearing in the top of the charts, but in the February 2007 FIS World Cup competition in Japan, an unexpected crash caused him to break his forearm, which unfortunately took him out of the running.
