If you are interested in learning how to ski, there are a few things to know before you get started. In many cases, the steps you take early on will shape the entire way you ski in the future and if you’re not using the right techniques, you may find it difficult to advance. Whether you plan on skiing occasionally, or if you want to take this up as a serious sport, getting the basics is essential.
1. Find the right instructor.
If you live in an area where there are many different ski resorts, you’ll have a wide variety of instructors available. It may be best to try out a few of them to see which ones match your own personal preferences. Each instructor will have a different style and they may use different methods. By trying out a few, you’ll be able to find the one that matches your own needs and this will help you learn more effectively.
If you don’t live in an area that has many different places to ski, you may be a bit more limited. You can rent ski instruction DVDs to learn at home, and take advantage of instructors whenever you go on vacation. It’s a bit tougher to learn this way, but you do have the ability to pick and choose which DVDs you can get to learn by.
2. Keep practicing.
In order to continue advancing in the sport, it is necessary to keep practicing. Just like any sport, if you don’t practice, you get rusty and it’s all too easy to fall back on old habits. This can be difficult in areas that don’t have snow all year round, but you may be able to find a few places nearby that make snow at least part of the year.
3. Use the Right Equipment.
A big part of how well you ski can be attributed to the gear you are using. We highly recommend getting a professional fitting from a ski instructor or gear shop so that you can be assured of having the right boots, skis and fittings. Poles are also necessary in many cases, but they will need to be the right length in order to be used effectively. It is a good idea to make sure that you get good quality equipment that will last for a long time. It is a bit more expensive, but in the long run, you’ll end up saving money.
4. Dress Appropriately.
This cannot be stressed enough. Even if you are just taking a short lesson, you need to wear appropriate ski clothing to ensure that you don’t get frost bite, or that you don’t get too cold. It is difficult to learn or practice when you feel miserable. Always wear more than enough clothing since it’s always easier to peel off a layer, than it is to try to add clothing you don’t have with you.
By taking the time to cover all of your bases, you’ll be able to quickly progressive to an intermediate skier.
